Please try to help the OP with the problem at hand or don't say anything.

My 84 Laser Turbo Automatic (the one that kicked a Daytona Turbo Z's arse for almost 1/4 mile... damned city streets) needed a tranny rebuid at 73K miles- guess Chrysler/Dodge didn't think people would power/brake the engine to get the turbo spooled before launch..? and it was for differential bearings, not the tranmission itself that it had to be rebuilt.

I've got an auto trans behind a 22re with 178k miles on it and it shifts fine, maybe a little late in my opinion. Still trying to dial in the 22r > 22re swap... but it does so without slippage between upshifts (slippage being a sign a trans is getting worn) and nearly always in the right gear: it sometimes seems to question me when I'm on the freeway and need to go faster so it doesn't always disengage OD when I'd like, but a little more pedal and it complies.

I guess your definition of 'garbage' means you trash it before it's done doing it's job?

taking off from a stop and a 'casual' pace, shifting from 1st to 2nd should happen when the engine is around 1800 rpm.

rationally speaking, it's an automatic transimission....
shift points depend on throttle position, load on the drve-line, etc.

My 91 22re can idle at ~950 rpms in 2nd @ 25 mph. A step on the pedal can take its 2nd gear to over 65 mph.

It's not an absolute- idle vs. gear....

This isn't when upshifting, it's when I am driving and I go around a corner, you know off one street onto another, and when I get on the gas again it seems like it should be in second gear but it's in 1st. Say around 12-13mph and it hits 1st for a second then quickly shifts right to 2nd. But upshifting and and dropping down for passing is all fine, no problems whatsoever.

Just didn't know if that was normal or not. I don't know, to me it just feels like it shouldn't be in 1st when going around a corner like that.

I've had 2 Toy autos, my first was in my old 90 4runner with a 22RE. It was the slow shifting, couldn't pick a gear and stay in it, it slipped, towards the end it would take off in 3rd, and then it wouldn't hold any gear but 1st and reverse..by hold a gear I mean, put it in drive and it would stall out.

My second was the POS that was in my 87 4runner I currently have. Slow, hard shifting, again couldn't pick a gear and stay in it on the highway...kind of like my dad's Dodge Ram. Then it started to slip, which made me swap in the 5spd before it took a turn for the worse like my old 90.

My dad also had a 93 P/U 3.0/auto... which didn't amaze me either

So in my experiences, Toy autos are garbage

Is your trans in first like you think it is or does it slip for a second before it catches 2nd gear?

My auto seems to be just fine but I have noticed that if I'm driving say 25-30 mph & let off of the gas & coast to around 10 mph & then give it gas again the RPM's will go up for a second before it engages fully. (is this what you are experiencing?) I think that it may just be normal as my trans was just rebuilt before I purchased the truck. Other than the second of higher RPM's the trans shifts & drives perfect.

It shouldn't do that. Try the easy stuff first. It's possible you might just have a loose wire on a shift solenoid.

I would check your kickdown cable. Sounds like it might be out of adjustment.

I just did a full tune up abotu 5K ago, cap, rotor, wires all from the dealer. Had to use Autolite plugs though...been meaning to change them to NGK's but haven't yet.

Not really sure what "good" gas is, but I usually run 93 Octane in it, not because it's any better just because I need the 93 because it pings with anything less in it.

I still need to check the timing, but now I'm tied up with the damn by-pass hose that is crammed against the firewall...$13 for a littel rubber U-hose at the dealer, and probably bloody wrists and hands. Oh the joys of a 3.slow!!

I will re-visit the tranny issue after that. Almost bought a '94 Runner, 5spd, 3.slow this weekend, but the guy had rolled the odometer back...blatently obvious. Got my eye on a decent '94 Xcab pickup with a 22RE too....I gotta get back to a 5spd...can't stand driving Auto and starting to get sick of the 3.slow.

Anybody know offhand the HP and Torque difference between the 22RE and the 3VZE? Just want to see if I would realy notice any difference.

Exclamation

I realize this is an extremely old thread, but here is something that may be of interest still.
