Well I downloaded this factory 1988 fsm for a 4 runner: http://granolaboy.net/temp/toyota_tr...4runner_88.pdf
Hopefully the diagnostics will help me figure this thing out.

Ok so with key on I have voltage at all the coonectors at the injector resistor so that I assume that's good.
So I guess can rule out the resistor. I can trigger the injectors I hear them clicking.
I am wondering if it's a fuel pressure issue?
Also this doohicky the cap at the end of it is broken I wonder if it works
It controls fuel pressure on startup.

More info I guess.
There are to signals between the ecu to the igniter to get it to run, IGT (trigger) and IGF (Fire)
The ecu tells the igniter to fire the coil when it sees cranking.
Thats the IGT signal.
The igniter fire the coil, then sends an IGF signal back to the ECU to let it know you have spark.
Thats the IGF signal.
The ECU then fires the fuel injectors.
The ecu wont fire the injectors if it doesnt get a IGF signal back from the ignitor.
Thats why you have injector pulse.
So you need to see whats missing.
You may have left something unplugged accidentally.
Thats my guess.
Back up a few steps and recheck the obvious, even if your sure its fine.
you can get wiring diagram at www.techinfo.toyota.com

...don't know if an 86 4 runner has a signal generator (magnetic pick up coil) in the distributor but that was the culprit in my 89 22re pickup. When i connected my Fluke to the generator it was within specs and my truck would run for a short while so I replaced the igniter $$$$ (the codes directed me in that direction)......still no go so I double checked the generator again and it was way out of specs. Replaced it (much cheaper than the igniter) and the truck was good to go for several months until the fuel pump failed

you need to get a fuel pressure reading. Have you changed the fuel filter lately? I ended up rigging up a fuel pressure gauge on my fuel filter when i was chasing down a problem. Couldnt find any other place to tap into, 1/8 npt is the fitting size. My truck did the same thing a couple years ago, would start up run a second or two then die. Ended up being a clogged fuel filter, it would let enough fuel through to fire up but not enough to maintain running.

Well guess what your right.
It was the fuel filter at first I was like naww. Something that simple.
I cracked it open and rust like crap poured out.
I got it off and drained it yup full of stuff. I put the new one on a few cranks later boom it fired right up.
Honestly the way it just quit I was certain it was something hard to fix. Oh and the TPS I put in it helped too it idles alot better now as well.
Anyways Happy camper here plus I just got a job today too as an installation PC tech for a project at Fletcher Allen.....
Nice pay is really good too. I start tomorrow at 7 am good timing too to have my 4 runner back up and running.
