This is my description - and someone can correct me: You put compressed air into the cylinder with a leakdown tester - when the piston is at TDC (top dead center) rock the crank back and forth a few degrees, and note how much air leaks out of the cylinder. If the pressure drops too much, then then your rings are bad.

Hehe, they're OEM head gaskets. The head gaskets lasted for almost 160,000 miles on my last motor, and they were OEM. They only failed because I let it go with bad valve seals for too long, burn too much oil, carbon up the pistons, raise compression, etc, etc...
I'm reading up on getting rid of the stock crossover as I type this! Since I can't afford headers I figured relocating the x-over is the next best thing.

Thats the kind of crossover I was thinking of doing. I don't really want to go under the tranny, since servicing the tranny would be a pain since I have an auto. I'll have to see if I can find a double flange, or figure out how to merge the pipes without one.

A lot of us that have done the 3.4 swap have custom crossovers. You might be able to use something like it for your 3.0. Here's the main thread on that:

Little bit of an update:
Working on degreasing all of the parts I'm going to paint, hopefully I'll have primer and paint on some of the parts by the end of the day. I hope to have the engine in the truck by the end of this week, and have it running by the end of the following week. And yes - Pics will follow!!

I dont know why i didnt think about this sooner... maybe you could take the 3.4 cross over and downpipe section and modify it to work on your rig to dump out the driver side. probly use the 3.0 flages to the manifolds. The 3.4 crossover meets much lower down and it would be basically mini headers then.

I did take pics during painting, but they came out blurry on my cell phone camera. I'll definatly take some good ones this weekend after the engine is all put together
Cost: I just hit the $3000 mark yesterday ordering the last bits and pieces for the installation (minus exhaust - straight pipe for the time being )
The total engine cost for me was $2745 ($1995-engine, $500-core, $250-shipping) Oh, and I didn't add my $500 core credit to my total, so I've spent more like $2500 once I get the core deposit back.

Alrighty - starting to make some progress!! Got the oil pump, pickup, baffle, rear main, and oil pan on the block today. I'm kind of in a bind right now because I'm waiting on my knock sensor and timing cover gaskets. I hope to get the bottom part of the engine (oil cooler, waterpump, bypass hose, etc) all put on by Monday. It's going to take me a little longer than anticipated to get this thing together. As smart as I am, I didn't bag & tag nuts & bolts when I took everything apart. I put all of the the bolts in one box, so I'm slowly going through everything and sorting stuff. Good thing I took pictures during teardown!!

Speaking of pictures, got a little eye candy for ya
Still sittling idle in the driveway - the back sags more since there's no weight in the front, and parts in the back
Starting to come together. Threw a valve cover on to get a glimpse of the finished unit
I don't know why I even painted this valve cover - can't see it anyway...
