if you have a 22RE in your '87, I say a 7M-GE if you want moderate power or a 7M-GTE if you want lots of power. If you have a 3.0L in your '87, I say 3.4L then supercharge it.

if your going to go with a toyota v8, go the all aluminum 4.0 to 4.3 1uz or 3uz, they both weigh about as much as an iron block 4 cylinder, the 2uz is considerably heavier. in fact, for more power, i think they are the lightest engines you could put in there, they are lighter than 3vze and 5vzfe. on the other big v8s, i know people have done it successfully, but you gotta remember how much torque those engines can make, and if the driveline can handle it. i think fo runner said it best, if you got a 22r, go 7mge or gte, if you got a 3.0, then 3.4 swap supercharged. both will give you plenty of power, stay all toyota, and be easier on the driveline than the torque of a v8.
just my 2cents

You should seriously take a look at the Lexus/Toyota 1UZ-FE engine. I'm putting the one into my Tacoma. Simply an amazing engine, quad cams/32 valves all aluminum. I loaded it into the back of my taco with a forklift last week and it didn't squash my rear springs (62" Deavers) very much at all. It is the lightest V8 I can remember. There are members on lextreme.com that have 400hp with cams, intake/exhaust and some porting. I've driven an LS400 before and it hauled butt so I'm not worried since I'll have the manual trans behind it. They sound mean too. It costs more to make more power to make up for a heavier engine so the weight is important to me. They take boost really well as they have very thick connecting rods and hardware that is even stronger than the later VVTI V8s. The 1UZ is the best V8 considering you can buy them REALLY cheap. The Lexus cars never break down so there is no demand for them from the parts dismantlers/junkyards.

There is a ton of support online from people tricking out Lexus cars, hot rod builders using them, race car builders & dune buggy fabricators slapping twin turbos on them. If you're going to go through all the work of putting a different engine in you might as well go big so you have no regrets. I was in the middle of building headers to turbo charge my 3rz when I realized how much the engine management system was going to cost me. For less than the price of that alone I got a 1UZ with everything I need to make it run shipped to me from Washington. Heck, if it's good enough for Ivan Stewerts last Toyota Baja 1000 a$$ kicking truck then it's good enough for mine. Here is a good place to start http://1uzfe.com/

2 questions.
How fast do you want to go?

How much money do you have to spend?

Casmitherz What transmission are you going to use? Is your tacoma 4wd? My truck is an 87, but has a t100 front end and TC suspension. Im guessing it will require some cut and pasting to make the engine fit, but 285hp stock might convince me. Thanks

A TBI 350 is probably going to be your best bet.
Howell EFI makes and awesome wiring harness and can sell you anything you need EFI wise.

But the stock transmission isn't going to last long, especially if you warm it up a bit, and the adapters aren't cheap.

But if you can score a whole TBI 350-SM465-NP205 setup and a Howell EFI wiring harness you'd be golden.

Yes yeesss the transmission, flywheel etc is going to be the beauty part! I'm going to be making my own adapter to mate my W59 (4wd transfer case intact) to the 1UZ. People have been putting over 350hp to the W59 with turbos so I'm just going to be careful with the V8. I'm on my second one (someone "borrowed" my truck and blew out my reverse, yeah i was pissed) so my transmission is like new and it will hold up just fine. The flywheel I got is a crazy twin clutch with the correct bolt pattern so everything should be fine once I do some tricky machining. I have a remedy for the ring gear which I will be happy to share after I'm done with it. Until then I don't even want to talk about it on a forum because all the "experts" will chime in with all their criticism even though they don't even work on their own trucks. I also live 5 minutes away from Advance adapters and know some of the guys there so things might get really interesting with their support.

I was going to try and keep things simple and go to a parts distribution center and match up the right flywheel out of 1000 different flywheels so that other people could learn exactly which flywheel to cross reference but I scored a fat deal on a light weight racing piece so I'm going to work with it first. Engine mounts are easy to make and the wiring just takes a little brainwork. When I get more work done on my website explaining everything I'll be happy to share.

I found a 1uzfe with a trannsmission for 2k in denver. Im told the lexus flywheel will match the tundra bell housing, we are going to line it up later this week. ORS says they can modify the wiring, 2wd to 4wd. This seems to be the crux. What do you think of just using an iforce?

Why not use Chevy 4.3 V6 Votech... Its basicaly a 350 minus 2 cylinders.. You can get a good amount of power out of those little things.
