I did a rear axle swap on my 95 4x4,3.0 a while back .Ive been wheeling with it twice since then but only a very short distance and didnt seem to have any issues.The donor truck was my 86 4x4 22 re and now that winter is approaching and I'll be using four wheel drive a lot more Im concerned I have mismatched differentials,so my question is how do I figure out what the gear ratios are for each of the axles.Plus I have visions of a solid axle swap in the future and will need to know what the rear axle from the 86 is to find a front match.

First of all, the v6 has a larger rear end diff....

That doeant matter you can still bolt a 4cyl diff into a v6 housing and vica versa.

Best way is to count the teeth on the ring gear and divide it.by the number of teeth on the pinion.
The other way is to count pinion rotation vs tire rotation. For example if the pinion turns just a hair over four rotations for 1 complete tire rotation then that would.be 4.10s. 4.5 rotations to one would be 4.56. Etc etc.

Another option is if its a factory differential you should be able to go by the paint color on the pinion nut.

It was most likely 4.10 out of the 22re.
I didnt realize you swapped whole axles

If your 86 22re was a 5spd then you have 4.10 gears from the factory. Automatic has 4.30 ratio from the factory. I have a factory 4.10 front end if needed

It is actually 2 tire rotations not one. So for every two tire rotations the drive shaft should spin to the corresponding ratio. Example: 2 tire rotations will spin drive shaft 4.10 times for a 4.10 diff.

It's hard to tell the difference between 4.1 rotations and 4.3 rotations so to be more sure rotate the tire 20 times to get 41 or 43 rotations of drive shaft

So in order to count ring gear and pinion gear teeth and do calculations is to drop the driveshaft and open the diff?And the tire rotation technique works on the front end also?The diff that came off the 86 22re was connected to an automatic transmission.The 95 3.0 truck I have it in now is also an automatic transmission.So I just have to jack it up turn the tires and count driveshaft revolutions with tire revolutions and calculate what?

Well at the least I'll be able to tell if theyre geared the same if both front and rear tire and driveshaft revolutions match,right?
