This has to be the worst idea I have ever heard.

If you could hook up the throttle cable so that it responded to the brakes and disengaged, great, otherwise this is wacko.

I can see using it off road, but driving down a highway... Yikes!

"Oh look at the nice dear, apply brakes, smack, undo throttle cable."

By the time you find it you are off in the ditch, with the victim smeared on the road behind you if you live to notice. Truck is toast, driver saved $60 on a throttle cable vs cruise.

That gizmo on ebay costs almost half what an audiovox cruise costs.

Yes, good points for sure. The hand throttle I have has a panic button, so to speak, hit the red button on the knob and it releases the throttle. But yes, even that is a separate step to do.



I only use the hand throttle for winching and welding, to keep the RPMs up. I also wired the A/C idle up valve to work as a fast idle switch. I use that a lot more on the trail. Keeps the engine up around 1000 RPM and is just a flip of the switch away.

Yeah, I know, this is more of a theoretical discussion although a lot of motorcycles use a throttle lock cruise control. I don't exactly want or need a full-featured cruise control system, though, and I don't know how well a vacuum setup would work on my poor 'lil 22R. A non-vacuum cruise control is $200! And don't underestimate reflexes...I somehow always manage to pop the car into neutral in a panic situation so it's still running after I stop!

(I will probably end up getting the Audiovox kit)

If you do go for the audiovox kit, tr and scrounge up a vacuum pump off another toyota with cruise. It doesn't matter what kind, and wire it into the cruise. The factory cruise comes with a vacuum pump, I needed one for anything besides flat terrain. Of course that is what you need it for, so...
I am going to buy the electric for my wifes matrix, just too ghetto to put a vacuum system on hers car. The matrix has 4 vacuum hoses total. Mine has like 60. Ha!

I have the factory cruise in my '85, it works off of engine vacuum and works just fine. I did add a little vacuum cannister to give me about 1" more vacuum capability (now pulls to 2" Hg used to stop at 3" on the vacuum gauge). But you can also get an all electronic CC unit as well, they cost a bit more.

The factory cruise has a built in vacuum pump, but installing a factory cruise would be a real pain in the rump. Just finding all the parts would take a while, unless you found a complete setup. Installing it would be challenging especially if you wanted the factory steering wheel.

Look on ebay for some of the older Sears cruise controls, They use magnets off the driveshaft and work AMAZING, my dad has them on both his trucks and it really works great and you can find em cheap on ebay

For a hand throttle for off road why not go with the factory Toyota parts

Cymon, if I recall correctly the SR5 column allowed you to adjust the steering wheel also and had intermitent wipers. If I were to buy your set up and stick it in my plain 85 would the wipers work? I figure they would but just want to make sure.

To make the CC work I would replace the TB on my truck and plug the wires in at the column and TB. Is that right?

LMK how much it would be to ship to 80125. Thanks for any info on this.

That is what the odd hole is for on my 89 truck on the left side of the steering wheel, mirroring the brake handle. I put a trailer brake controller there, at some point they changed the lower dash panel and it doesn't have that space.

yes it is a tilt column as for the other things I am not sure how and if it will hook up to a 85 you will have to give me a week to get it weighed for the shipping cost. I am pretty sure some one may chime in if this will work I cant see why it would not work I guess the thing to check is that did the 85s had a intermittent wiper option I or my buddy will drive out to the storage unit in the next few days and pick up the column and I will get some picks of the plugs on it as well.
