didn't drop the tank or take off the bed. from what i can see the 86 has a 3 wire plug. the 89 has 2, what is the 3rd wire on the 86 plug and can i rig up a connector and switch the the 2wire unit

i checked the connector has power. unplugged it and the needle dropped all the way down past E. plugged it back up and it kept rising and stopped a lil over the E line

the 86 i bought i've been replacing parts. short story going down the road and it almost dies so i give it gas. happen to pull over and it's gushing out gas, top outlet has rusted in half. so i get home get ready to switch everything, and i cant' turn the line nuts on either

any safe fixes for splicing together the 2 lines.

Without photos I would have to say use the appropriate size EFI fuel hose and EFI style hose clamps. All available from Autozone.

top one is of the 86's rusted cap lol. under pressure i guess it blew. 2nd one is of my 89 these these things on either truck aren't moving. been sprayed with pb blaster at least a few hours. 3rd one is of where the 86 broke with it's rusted lines

Looks like my 86. Rubber hose and u will b good to go. I had the same prob with my 88 as well Toyota wanted 350.00 for a new one

For the 89 you should be able to break that joint if you have a 17mm. and a 14mm. flare wrench. If you have never seen flare wrenchs go to this link!

From your last pictureof the broken pipe on the 86, put a boxed end wrench on the hose fitting, and then put a 1/2" drive ratchett with a deep 6 point socket on the broken fitting. If you've got strong arms you can break it apart yourself, if not have a buddy hold the wrench while you unscrew it with the ratchett. Once you get it apart take the male fitting that has the broken pipe flip it over so that you can see the single flare, put in in a vice and drill out the pipe with a 5/16th. drill. once you get the pipe out of the fitting, get some 5/16th. steel gas line, shove the fitting on the line and put a single flare on it. If flaring pipe is new to you, most automotive stores have replacement fuel line parts already made up to get you out of a jam. I think some of the ones for a GM are 5/16 steel line with a single flare on one end and made for rubber gas line on the other end.

In your first post you were asking why the 89 sending unit had 2 wires and the 86 had 3... The 86 probably has a low fuel light and the 89 does not. Then you moved to the pickup assemblies.
If your issue was the sending unit, then why all the pictures of the pickup assembly?

Anyone using or know of a alternative fuel unit ? so i can fill up and see i have a full tank, then when it gets lower i can see it just like it would as if it were stock.
