I think there is supposed to be a thin paper barrier between the two... but when I replaced the t-case on my old 87 4Runner I didn't feel like going to the parts house and getting a new paper gasket so I just slopped some liquid gasket on there and I didn't have any problems. I hope that helps a little bit. I could have committed a cardinal sin by doing this but what the heck...

Thin paper? Try solid aluminum.
All that is on the back of the tranny is a single splined hole that the xcase input shaft goes into. It is sealed from the transfer case.
Assuming, of course, that this is a five speed.
