Diesel implants for 1989 4wd?

What diesel engines have been successfully retrofitted to 4wd Toyotas? I've got an '89 with 225k on the 3.0 liter pig-dog engine, and while I like the truck I'd gladly swap engines.

We do have an Engine swap section bro...

Actually, heres the diesel swap section..
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f162/

Ive heard of people putting the CUMMINS !! (lolz) 4BT ( i think thats the name...) in our rigs.
Theres the 3L Turbo diesel...theres a turbo diesel version of the 22re but i think its got a bit smaller displacement...
Lots of options man, just gotta do your research..

And while you're doing your research, be sure to confirm that it's almost certainly illegal, and before some wanna be rocket scientist pops in and says "hey, they don't do no stink'n emissions check it my state", it's federal !!!!!!!!

It's not illegal (well at least the DMV doesn't think it is). I swapped in a 3.0L toyota turbo diesel, 1KZ-TE, in place of my 3.0v6 and I love it. But it's not cheap to do. As far as emissions the state told me I just have to send in an amendment to the title for the type of fuel. Then they will send me a diesel title.....sounds legit to me, in all 50 states. So far I'm getting about 27mpg on the highway after I intercooled it, so with the price of gas it about breaks even in cost with the gas motor, but my V6 M/T set up wouldn't squall the 32" tires quite like the diesel/auto will. I think the cummins motors would be a cheaper alternative with a bigger selection of transmissions (M/T's are rare with 1KZ's) but the 4BT is generally considered a little too heavy for a minitruck, they do make a 3.3L something or other that may be a little lighter.

It's federally illegal (EPA) to swap in diesel in a gasoline vehicle if that exact year/type vehicle wasn't offered for sale here in the US with that exact diesel that one wants to swap in.

well I guess luck was with several people (including some in California) that went through the same process and now have diesel titled toyotas. The engine does need to be from at least the same year model as your truck, preferably newer.

In Canada they don't care as long as the engine passes a E-test. (as long as the diesel does not smoke at idle it passes .
The only other problem is insurance. A lot of companies do not like "modified" vehicles. Also, Toyota's were sold with diesel engines and they don't need to know what specific engine is in it............

Doesnt that fall under the 500 cars certs handed out each year for hobbyist....I.e. kits cars you can put whatever motor you want in it and then get it registered......etc..

I think this is the same gig as it now becomes a hobby car....if its illegal--then Texas has alot of outlaws---

ask your local dmv about a title change for an alternative fuel vehicle designation. then shop for a nice vw tdi. try to get one that didn't come from a car with a number 3 as its first in VIN.

In California, the DMV is not involved in smog checks / auto engine swaps.
Here, it's the Bureau of Automotive Repairs and they have a referee program that deals specifically with this situation.
http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResource...e_Centers.html
Referee Centers perform the following services:
Inspect Vehicles with Engine Changes, Gray Market Vehicles, and Specially Constructed Vehicles
Engine Changes
Vehicles whose original engines have been replaced with an engine not originally offered for that vehicle's year, make, or model.

Gray Market Vehicles
Vehicles imported into the United States that do not meet U. S. EPA standards.

Specially Constructed Vehicles
Vehicles, such as dune buggies or kit cars, that are deemed "specially constructed" by the DMV.

Once these vehicles are inspected and certified by a Referee Center, a BAR label will be affixed to the vehicle. Any licensed Smog Check station may perform subsequent inspections as long as the BAR label remains in place and the vehicle's emissions equipment remains the same.

I was in Texas last year for a week and I met a guy and his friend who were certain Canada was a county in Washington against the Alaska- Washington border. A little part of me died that day.

I should point out that people in Texas are probably the MOST friendly people on Earth. I mean that. Makes us Canadians look like the grinch himself. I went for a walk, and found myself in the middle of a lower income black neighbourhood and contrary to what TV told me, I didn't get mugged, or beaten, those guys were even more friendly than the people in the hotel I was staying at. I ended up going for lunch with a few of them.
