I tried it both ways once when I was performing a compression test. Cranked over with the tester installed, but forgot to open the throttle up. Did it again immediately except this time it was WOT, and got a reading 10 psi higher. Granted, this was a very unscientific comparison, but it did seem to make a difference. I think that since we are really trying to see major differences between cylinder, that it is probably ok to do it with the throttle closed, as long as you are consistent. The readings may be a tad low, but if they are even, you are good. Just my $.02.

There should be a sticky on the correct procedure on a compression test.

Atleast 90% of people dont get it right. Ive even seen people pull 1 spark plug at a time.
The 3 things to remember are; 1) start with a full battery 2) pull ALL the plugs 3) WOT
someone said to put a little oil in the cylinders before starting. this is not a bad idea however, dont put too much in as this would displace air in the combustion chamber and give a false reading and possibly screw up your gauge. What I do is turn over the motor with all the plugs out until it has oil pressure.
We all know what vaccume is and how its made by our engines. So it would be logical to assume that any restriction in air flow to the cylinder would effect readings.
When you are finished, and you dont like the numbers, its time for a leakdown test. That will be covered in the next chapter.

Also, I always do mine with a cold engine.

Btw, 10% from the highest to the lowest is the rule of thumb. The static min-max depends on the engine and the compression ratio.

lemme just through this out there-

IF you don't open the throttle, and your results pass... YOU PASS!! opening the throttle will only get you higher compression

IF you don't remove the plugs, and your results pass... YOU PASS!! removing all the plugs will only let the engine spin faster and build higher compression

IF HOWEVER YOU FAIL, YOU SCREWED UP THE TEST BY NOT DOING IT CORRECTLY AND NEED TO RE-DO IT...
AND DO IT THE RIGHT WAY THIS TIME!!!

I see your point but why not just do it the right way.
Some of us would like to know if we are capable of getting an A+ on the big test if we study instead of staying out all night drinking and just getting by with a D.
In other words, I would like to know the actual numbers my rig is capable of.
