Say if you can see those grooves in the timing cover where the chain has eaten into it, pressure test your cooling system and with a flash lite you may be able to verify the coolant running out of the grooves. I have done this before. IMHO it's more than likely the timing cover at fault, been there done that!! Good luck.

Got into it yesterday and indeed the grooves went thru into the water jacket. Albeit a tiny longitudinal crack, that opens up under heat and pressure. No drivers side guide left at ALL. So I guess I'll take the pan off to clean it out, but I bet that guide has been gone for years........

Did the timing chain, gears, guides, tensioner and cover. These all went on easily. Got the distributor back in on the money. Toughest part of job, remembering how the brackets were attached for the alt and PS pump. This is a time consuming job, but well worth not paying my local dealer $1500 to do it. Thanks to all for the writeup and how tos. Coolant system still gurgling a bit while it is burping a bit. Seems to have a bit more pep too!

It can just be da timing cover. Da chain rub's againts it causing the oil and water 2 mix. Trust. At my shop we do 22r's like nothing.probably rebuilt like 2 or 3 per week

In da timing cover, Da chain rubs...
In "The" timing cover, "the" chain may rub...
That's what he did and he's way past that. He has her up and running.

Little more "PEP" no doubt! that cam timing was retarded due to the chain stretch, with that new chain it's probably dead on. Glad it worked out. A tip on removing that front cover without removing the head is to remove the front oil pan bolts that go into the front cover, then take a good size screw driver and smack the front edge of the pan downward, breaks it loose from the cover and gives you a little clearence for reinstalling the cover, I never have pulled an oil pan to do that job,of course now that your done you can do that when you do your buddys chain job. Good job and good savings!
