Carburetor Problems

ok, Newbie here to the site so i ask that you may bare with me.

i have an 86 toyota pickup, 22R motor. the motor is about 2 years old, maybe 30k miles on it. i bout the truck a year ago, and this was the info given to me. truck has been running great ever since about 3-4 months ago.

1.) truck idling at lowes, and then spitting black smoke, and choked on me. got it cranked and spitting black smoke and drove it home. did this for a couple of days. went to advanced auto parts, said maybe the valve or float in the carb is sticking, try using "sea foam" . so i did and it cleared up pretty quickly.

2). driving down the road one day, i hear a pop, and then my truck starts running funny again, same thing, running rich. but sometimes i can cruze down the road at 60mph, and then come to a stop and it be running fine.

soooo.... im thinking, ok maybe rebuild the carb? check the fuel filter and replace it? also see if any rust is in the tank?

aniy help is great. sorry for the long message.

yeah ide redo seafoam, then put some new spark plugs in it and replace the fuel filter if this doesent work then ide reccomend getting a weber, alot of people dont have luck with rebuilding or remains, i never did, you cant adjust the mixture per 86' emissions lmao

carb problems

yoterr,
what do you mean by "cant adjust the mixture per 86' emissions lmao"?

i spoke with a guy at advance auto parts, it sounded to him like the needle was sticking, the needle where the float is inside the carb. b/c i can tap on the carb, and it run alright from then on until it gets stuck again.

i agree about rebuilding it, it looks complicated, i bought a rebuild kit and its looks really complicated.

any more advice? thanks in advance.

Change the fuel filter, probably crap getting in the bowl and causing the needle to stick. pull the top of the carb off and clean out the bowl with brake clean, clean up the needle/float and put it back together.

heck go to a junkyard by a carb off of a running 22r..rebuild it..then swap it on your truck..then your only out a little bit of $$$..

if that doesnt work (change out your filter first thing though..lol )then buy a weber....i've heard great things about the 32/36, 34, and the 38..i myself am going with the 32/36..because it gives the best gas mileage..and decent power improvement..and not nearly as much smog ..
