i can buy a door that has the rear swing tire carrier... but i dont have the extra support in my rear quarter panel... it looks like the tire mount to the door and there is a separate piece that has the swing out license plate holder.

It is the swing arm that the tire attaches to and swings on so you can open your rear door. It is the swing arm that takes the weight and then locks in to the door. You would have to add supports in the tailgate itself if you wanted to just have it solely attached to the tailgate. Either way..you have to add support.

I went through the same thing, so what I did was mount the gate, and then put the carrier in the gate mount, held it so the top bar was level and drilled one hole (a helper really helps) slid a bolt in, then drilled the others. Then I took it all apart and made some internal mounting plates from 1.25" x3/8 flat bar (they act as large washers from the inside of the body) put a generous dab of RTV around the mounting holes and bolts and put it all back together. No vibrating while offroad or on with the spare in place, also good and tight with the carrier opened. Even with a 33x12.5 spare I can sit on it open with no ill effect.

do you ever get down to southern ontario theres a group of us that goes out wheeling nearly every week?
also how did you get to the inside of the rear quarter... from inside the truck??? or from the wheel well...
i think i might be able to get the tailgate pretty cheap and i alway wanted a rear tire carrier.... i have tools and with 2 people it seems like a good sunday job once this crazy snow lets up...

No I don't get down to Southern Ontario. I would like to get there sometime, but there is a bunch of mods that are pending (that I've been putting off for a while - 1. homemade winch bumper/winch 2. front 4" suspension lift/rear leaf conversion, 3. rear spool/new gears 5.71, 5. 35's or 37's depending on tire weight, 6. OBA, 7. install my summit LSPV in cab so I can adjust it while on the fly 8. redo my rear bumper/hitch ) that I need to take care of first. Do you ever make it up this way to wheel? As for the rear quarter, I accessed it through the inside of the cab, but small hands are mandatory for this one. As for the flat bar, just bend it to match the back side of the hinge, drill the holes with a little side to side play (because they won't fit as well inside the body) then bolt it up with additional washers on the very inside. Hope this helps..
