Angry CA Emissions - The joy of it all

1988 Toyota SR5 4x4 22RE 5 Speed - tags due in December.

Tested 2 years ago
01/27/09

15mph
(%co2 14.6)
(%o2 .1)
(HC {max 135} {Ave 34} meas 89)
(co {max .87} {Ave .11} meas .16)
(NO {max 1058} {Ave 260} meas 1052)
25 mph
(%co2 14.8)
(%o2 .1)
(HC {max 115} {Ave. 23} meas 60)
(co {max 1.08} {Ave. 0.10} meas 0.10)
(NO {max 918} {Ave. 217} meas 911)

Passed by small margin.

11/17/10

first test
15mph
(%co2 14.5)
(%o2 .2)
(HC {max 135} {Ave 43} meas 42)
(co {max .87} {Ave .14} meas .11)
(NO {max 740} {Ave 238} meas 1031)
25 mph

(%o2 .0)
(HC {max 115} {Ave. 35} meas 22)

(NO {max 642} {Ave. 208} meas 754)

failed 15 and 25mph on NO2
THEY LOWERED THE MAX!

My Cat is only a year old. I replaced the Oxy sensor with a Denso OEM. I noticed the exhaust didn't smell as bad after so I was hopeful.

12/09/10

second test
15mph
(%co2 14.0)
(%o2 .4)
(HC {max 135} {Ave 43} meas 106)
(co {max .87} {Ave .14} meas .50)
(NO {max 740} {Ave 238} meas 1662)
25 mph
(%co2 14.7)
(%o2 .0)
(HC {max 115} {Ave. 35} meas 27)
(co {max 1.08} {Ave. 0.16} meas 0.14)
(NO {max 642} {Ave. 208} meas 795)

failed 15 and 25mph on NO2 again, but worse

Found and repaired major vacuum leaks, replace oil, cleaned air filter. I started filling up with 91 oct hoping I could lower the combustion temp a little.

3rd test
2/15/11

15mph
(%co2 14.0)
(%o2 .4)
(HC {max 135} {Ave 43} meas 111)
(co {max .87} {Ave .14} meas .46)
(NO {max 740} {Ave 238} meas 1294)
25 mph
(%co2 14.1)
(%o2 .2)
(HC {max 115} {Ave. 35} meas 82)
(co {max 1.08} {Ave. 0.16} meas 0.39)
(NO {max 642} {Ave. 208} meas 1231)

FAIL!

Time to get serious

I read that the fuel damper could cause lean condition and was hard to diagnose. I had serious issues with mine in the past and ordered a new one from Toyotapartseast for a total of $108.00. I replaced the EGR vac modulator, spark plugs with Denso u-groove, and finally, (I'm sure this was the ticket) a new catalytic converter. My old one was not CA legal. I guess the smog tech never looked because his print out always said it passed visual.

3/14/11 CHP stop for expired tags. Fix-it ticket. My bad.

4th test
3/22/11

15mph
(%co2 14.6)
(%o2 .3)
(HC {max 135} {Ave 43} meas 12)
(co {max .87} {Ave .14} meas .00)
(NO {max 740} {Ave 238} meas 1)
25 mph
(%co2 14.7)
(%o2 .1)
(HC {max 115} {Ave. 35} meas 1)
(co {max 1.08} {Ave. 0.16} meas 0.00)
(NO {max 642} {Ave. 208} meas 0)

on 89 oct fuel with no additive other than what comes out of the pump.

Victory! Now to get the fix-it ticket signed off.

i recently went through almost the exact same thing. Everyone was telling me it wasn't the cat and i needed to fix the issue. After tuning up everything, still failed Nox. Replaced cat, boom passed with flying colors...Same issue here with limits getting lower. My Honda they are targetting, having to go smog check only station every year and getting more stringent. They are out to force early retirments on older cars.

I seriously don't believe that recycling vehicles at a higher rate is good for the environment. Obviously the move to get older vehicles off the road is to generate sales and boost tax revenue. "80% of Toyotas sold in the last 20 years are still on the road today." Because we love them and won't cash them in as clunkers. But some out there want to change this behavior. I say screw them, my truck will keep rolling down California highways and byways.

That just goes to show you what a new cat will do on older cars. People spend too much time and money on the cheaper stuff that just adds up to more than a cat.

Now put your old cat back on and save the new one for your next test.

I passed my 87 22re with an empty cat for years, after a fresh rebuild guess the catalyst just rattled loose and blew out the tails piper because that sucker was just a cheater chamber, after a few years though it started failing at idle and i had a new one LoL, it pays to go to the guy with the oldest smog machine in town!
