Looking at a '94 Toyota 4x4 4cyl, 5sp with 207K on it. Looks like its been well maintained, and the original owner has all service records (which I haven't gone through). Claims is doesn't currently need anything, but what kinds of things can start to go wrong with these at this mileage? If timing chain and water pump haven't been done, I'll do that...anything else? How many miles can you reasonably expect to get from this chassis/drivetrain (exlcuding engine) assuming good maintenance? And what about the engine?

I have a 94 just over 200,000 miles. Seems to be running fine. I hope it lasts a good while longer.

I'm over 350,xxx miles on my 4wd, 3vze. lower control arm bushing starting to go out. power steering pump too. valve covers began to leak around 285,xxx miles.

i drove my 90 with the same engine & tranny from 180k to 240k and didn't have anything change with how it drove. Only maintenance on it was a thermostat, oil, and belts. It really could have used a valve adjustment, just never got around to it. Started to get some rust around the rear wheel wells, and the paint on one fender started to look bad, but i think it was replaced at some point.

A great thing about the 22re + 5spd combo is that they made millions of them, has to be one of the cheapest setups to replace, if something did go wrong. Even at 240k though I would have driven my 90 cross country at the drop of a hat, it ran that well. I guess the fact that 2 yrs after I traded my 90 on the 97, I bought an 85 with rust issues to restore says something too.

What about the front and rear ends on these? Do they need rebuilding? Any thoughts on approximate cost? I'm guessing it would only be a couple hundred to get a tc rebuilt...

Body and interior on this one is about as clean as you could get for a 13 y.o. truck.

If you're worried about that I've got a set of front and rear 4.10 third members that are in very good condition. I'll sell them for $50 each.

You really cannot go wrong with that setup. Buy a Toyota factory service manual, do all the work yourself, and in no time you'll be a 22re expert.

Don't the fronts have birfs like Land Cruisers? I'm always hearing how much it costs to have these rebuilt...

94 has CV joints, 85 4r was the last with a solid front axle, so it was the last year with birfs. On the 94 you could swap in manual hubs & save some wear and tear on the CV's if you wanted.

There COULD BE a number of things go wrong with it. But thats the same with all USED vehicles. You take your chances, but as far as the 4 cyl 5spd. tranny setup, thats quite a bit more simple and easy to maintain. IMO. So, how much are they asking for this rig? Any pics? Let us know how it plays out. Tim

My 94 22RE 5spd already has manual hubs.

Engines are like $1,500 installed if the whole thing blows and you can buy new trannies dirt cheap on the forums. As far as a cheap reliable rig, you cant go wrong with what you are looking at. Mine fits 33X9.50s with no lift too

11.5, yes i realize that the 33's you have are thinner, and im not running the stock wheels either, but im just pointing out what tires you can fit depends on a lot of things.
