Another verification of knuckle/CV axle seals question
Hello all.
Sorry to bombard you all with another question about this, but I am in the midst of a front end rebuilt on my 89' 4Runner V6, and like many others on here, I have discovered that the Inner Knuckle seal that butts up against the CV axle is out of production, and that nobody makes aftermarket versions of it..
I also have read the threads on here concerning the updated part numbers of the newer seals you need to buy that work with one another, such as on this thread: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...rt-earn-96581/
Although I have to say after reading different threads, I am finding conflicting information about which seals to actually get, as the threads are very convoluted and don;t make much sense...
From what I can tell, from peoples have said the following from their experience:
1: you need: part numbers: 90304-76005, and 90316-60004
2: You need: Part numbers: 90304-76003, and 90316-60004
3: You need 90316-60004, and don't need the other seal at all.
I also have seen some people talking about a changing out the bushings for later ones that are thicker, having to "shave" the seals down, and have seen many people run into the problem of not being able to put the retaining C-clip on the end of the axle once putting the new seals on. Can anyone break down exactly which ones are needed that allow everything just to bolt back together? Digging through all this information is making my head spin, and I figure it would be beneficial if we had one that just got right to the point.

looks like the seal you need depends on the bushings you have, old part vs new part
LCE has a kit, that's what I would go with if you want to not worry about it, never done it myself though

So I just spoke with LCE about that kit, which includes the 90316-60004 seal, and I asked if you needed a specific seal on the CV shaft, or even one at all, and they began sending me a bunch of links to random front end parts and kept dodging the question...
It looks to me like they are not even sure!

on post # 56 that 90304-76005 and 90316-60004 will not allow you enough clearance to put on the axle snap ring without making modifications to one of the seals.
I guess it depends on the axle, as it looks like they made minor changes to the steering knuckles as the years went on. I guess i'll just bite the bullet and order some, and report my finding back here...

I don't know for certain about the clearancing. but is my opinion that when all new seals are used, it may take quite a bit of force to pull the axle out enough to seat the snap ring.
In fact if little or no force is necessary, it is likely that the seals will not face each other tightly enough to effectively do their job.
It is not too hard to fabricate a small pulling device which can use the threaded hole in the axle splined end to put some outward force on the axle.

Okay, I have ordered the 90304-76005 and 90316-60004 seals, and can confirm that they do work together on my 89', and that i have been able to put the snap ring and spacer on.
HOWEVER, read on:
I think I ran into the same issue that is tripping a lot of people up, because when I first greased up the CV shaft, and stabbed it into the Knuckle, the same result happened.. you didn't have the clearance to put on the snap ring and spacer, even with using brute force to try and line it up.
Well, i gave it a shot with the other side without any grease, and with a little coaxing, it fit right in and had plenty of snap ring clearance... Long story short, the two new seals work VERY well, and seal up so well that if there is too much grease on the CV shaft, it won;t allow you to push it all the way back together.
I of course, pretty much packed the cavity with grease, and then put quite a bit of it grease on the CV shaft, so just make sure you don't over fill it and they work perfectly.
