89 runner wheeling pic
Oh how I hate not having a locker....
Poser flex.
Tire in the air.
Stopped due to wheel spin.
Bumper drag but I made the climb.
My spotter.
Didn't make this one either.
Entry point.
The climb I make every weekend in my truck. It idles up this and the 4runner made it 25 feet and got stuck.
Diagnosis...... I need lockers.

Diagnosis confirmed. A locker or two needed. Hell, add three or 4 lockers and you'll be able to drive upside down I reckon. Shore is a purdy truck though. With no rust like that you'd be able to sell that for $5-8 grand up here if the drivetrain was in decent shape.

No decision yet but I'm leaning more and more towards selling the truck and keeping the 4runner. I'll be able to make a better informed decision in a few months and after I've had a chance to wheel the runner some more.

Yup the but sag is pretty bad but it's an easy fix. Right now I have to decide how I want to lift it. I can go with a front lift kit (there is one for sale in the classifieds) for 300$ plus shipping and a set of 3" Downey rear springs for 219$ plus shipping, although I've heard they sag in a hurry, or I can do ZUK's in the rear for less than 200$ and BJ's up front for 109$. Either way I'm going to lift it a little and then wheel it once it's lifted so I can find out if it makes much of a difference.

My Downey springs have been pretty good, Not sure how much they have sagged if at all. I'll take a measurement from the rim to the wheel well and let you know what it is.

Hey Robb. I didn't really pay attention last time but does your 4runner have that "hot rod" look with the rear higher than the front? I'm just wondering since you have BJ's up front (I'm guessing 1 1/2") and 3" of lift in the rear. If your springs haven't sagged then that gives me another option for the back end.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Actually lockers are the last thing that one should get.
Armour (rocker guards first and a trany/xfer case skid/protection, then bumpers) and then learn how to drive it.
Were you aired down at all (doesn't look like it) ??
Were you disconnected in the front ?
No lockers.... No problems.....
It's hard to see, and no photos this trip, however if you look behind and to the right you can see the drop off of the cliff that I just climbed up.

Junkers if you're planning on selling the truck or making the 4Runner your wheeling rig don't spend the money on another locker. It's not hard to put the truck third member in the 4Runner and vice versa. Same with the whole rear axle. I have an 86 pickup axle in my 87 4Runner. My ring and pinion were worn out.
I can't remember if your pickup is a 22R or a 3.0 but either way the third members are interchangeable. If the third in your truck is a V6/turbo diff then just swap the lower ends of the driveshafts too, as the d-shaft bolt pattern is bigger on a V6 diff.

Pulling the thirds out of the truck to save money on a locker is not going to work for me. The 4.56's I have in the truck now will go with it when/if it sells and I'm leaving the Aussie in there also. It's a good selling point. Also don't see any reason to swap out the thirds since the 4runner is going to have deeper gears than 4.56's.
Thank you for the advice though.

Ah. I didn't know you had plans for lower gears in the 4Runner. Just trying to give some low-budget options, as my mind is always in low-budget mode.
I may be wrong, but I don't think first generations came with rear sway bars. I think they started using rear sway bars when they started using rear coils in 1990. They're a lot worse about body roll than leaves. The leaf springs when they were new that is. Butt sag leafs suck around corners.
