89 22R carb help

i am new to this forum and to my truck. it is an 89 SR5 4X4 with the 22r and about 200k on the clock. my experience with carburaters is not really there and i was curious to any tips, tricks, advice that you guys may have as far as a replacement/upgraded carb? i am also doing a tune up and a new timing chain/oil pump/water pump/timing cover to gain peace of mind. i have heard that advancing the timing 2-3 degrees will somewhat increase power. are there any negative effects of this and do i advance ignition timing or cam timing? last but not least, i want a header and freer flowing 2.25" exhaust but i dont want that weed eater sound, any muffler recomendations? thanks for all the help

although i am new to the carburated toyota i have owned a 90 4X4 22RE, a 90 4Runner 3vz, and currently a 06 tundra 4.7. thanks again for all the help and advice.

you will get mixed results on keeping the asin factory carb and doing a Weber conversion. You can also use a Holly conversion as well, but it's not as popular or recommended. If your not experienced with carbs, I would just stay with the factory carb. As with the Weber carbs, there is a learning curve with tuning them correctly.

Some people on here have experienced better performance running 10-12 degrees advance on ignition timing while others run best at the factory 0 degrees. It all depends on the overall health of the motor and what mods are done to it.

You can also advance cam timing as well, usually 2 to 3 degrees seems best, but you will need the adjustable cam gear available from LC engineering to do so.

However, they are not fully compatible with the carb motors due to the fact the fuel pump is run off the cam via an eccentric spacer and some modifications have to be done to it to install it to clear the adjustment bolts on the cam gear.

Easiest way to do this is to convert it over to an electric fuel pump (not from a 22re) and use the OEM spacer that takes the place of the fuel pump eccentric from an EFI 22re.

thanks for the help. im not looking for anything major, its gonna be my daily driver with factory gears and 31" mud tires so im looking for the best fuel economy i can get with good passing power. do you mean to advance the ignition timing 10-12 degrees or set the timing at 10-12 degrees. i was just gonna advance it 2 degrees over the factory recomendation. as for the carb, im mechanically inclined and feel i have a large enough network to get it adjusted i just dont know which carb does what ie. 32/36, 34/34, outlaw 38, or the holley. i just want to know what will run best for what i want. im also considering an EB cam. its gonna be a work in progress for sure but i like to tinker on the weekends. i hope to do 4.56 gears before to long. thanks again for your input
