My daily driver (Roxanne) is a 1988 22RE 2.4L 4x4 with 240K miles. Within this calendar year she began popping out of 1st gear, then lately popping (and resisting going into) 3rd gear.

I installed a new shift lever bushing and polyurethene cap. The sloppy shifting diminished a bit, but the 3rd gear issue remains and appears to be worsening. The transmission noise was most noticeable while driving without the mounting plate and boots in place. Clearly trouble ahead.

I am investigating the feasibility of swapping the W56b transmission with another W56b unit, primarily to quicken the process and limit obstacles. I'm no master mechanic by any measure, but if this is something I can tackle then it's preferable to letting Roxanne slowly deteriorate gear by gear.

I'm putting together a preliminary list of tasks I should accomplish prior to and while doing the swap, such as:

* Replace clutch
* Replace T/O bearing
* Replace seals (which ones?

What I need is input identifying any factors I don't know enough to consider, as well as parts I should consider replacing/upgrading.

What should I look for in a donor tranny?

Replace Freeze plugs on backside of engine
Replace Rear main seal
Sway bar bushings (if applicable)

Long shot but since you will have the drive shafts off, you can also do the seals on them, pinion, etc.

I'd recommend buying a cheap transmission jack if you are doing it yourself with no help, even with help it makes it a breeze

I bought a cheap trans scissor jack at harbor freight for $60 and it made the swap so much easier. I even used it for the fuel tank and other things.

If your doing a used tranny then I would reseal it and consider doing the engines rear main as well.

Well, after swapping the transmission last August and putting some new Yokohama Geolander tires and a new windshield in her, some asshole STOLE it from my Colorado Springs driveway early Sunday morning.

Last three characters of the license plate are UNM. Gray interior, but I put in some newer 4Runner blue seats and a 4Runner instrument cluster (with tach, ammeter, temp gauge).

Nothing yet. She was stolen two weeks ago today. I'm telling everyone to keep their eyes peeled.

After having the trans fall off one of those "cradle / scissors" trans jacks (this was bout the 4th or 5th job using ti) and missing crushing my knee...

I shelled out for a nice Lincoln (made in USA) hydraulic low jack

And it actually works much better....
