87 4runner sr5 speedo/tach question
I tried searching for some info on this but here goes. I bought this 4runner which is a factory sr5 22re with what appears to be the factory sr5 cluster however the speedo does not work and neither does the tach. So far ive taken the dash apart and inspected the cable it could be dried out im not quite sure. I did however run a wire directly to the screw in the back of the tach in hopes of trying to get it to work but no dice. Ive wired in a aftermarket tach that works fine but id like to keep it original and get my speedo back. Everything else works fine on the cluster so i called a local junkyard and they have a sr5 cluster for 75 buckw not sure what out of if its auto v6 or 5 speed so I will have to ask. Just wondering is there anything else i could do to try and get them working?

Does the speedometer cable turn? Probably easiest to jack up one rear wheel and spin it while watching the cluster end.
The speedo is mechanical, the tach is electronic. If you've tried jumping the tach lead, you probably have an electrical problem in the meter somewhere. It doesn't sound like you feel ready to tackle that sort of problem.

Yeah i figured its either the speedo and tach itself i was just wondering if anyone had ever had to deal with it. Maybe resoldering points etc etc. Ill check the speedo cable out when i get home thats pretty simple to determine if it works or not it either spins or it doesnt lol. What. I think is the problem is probably either the cable is frozen or the speedo is gone itself and same with the tach id imagine. Thanks! I will check the cable to be sure.
