howdy folks;
thanks for the replies:
It is indeed a diesel - a turbo diesel indirect injected - 2.4 L
and it was avaliable for one year I believe in the U.S.
it was the second diesel available in pickups from 1980- 1986
first was the 2.0L non turbo diesel- dunno what the designation to the motor ( as th 2L or 2LT refrence to the 2.4 L diesel and turbo diesel)
hoping closer to to find some diesel / turbo diesel guys closer to home - Canada is so cold and so far away
Is where truck came from - I understand they were popular there
thanks y'all

i will have to skulk around for some - I have seen them but dont recall where off hand
pretty similar to the 22R in horsepower - a bit higher in torque
best part is where I am located - bioDiesel
you can find them - parts are a bit dicey - UK of all places has the most to offer yet the exchange rate is killer
peace

Looks to be decent, I wonder how it is for longevity.. i would really consider swaping one it this next spring.. probally the only engine swap i would consider.. my 22RE does all i need it to, but man the bottom end of a diesel would rule, and economy. I wouldnt be suprised if my tranny, cluctch etc bolted up... and the motor mounts were the same...

yep, ive seen the top gear several times. 35 mpg highway is quite impressive. Im assuming thats the 2wd model that gets 35? still thats way better than the gas engine equivalent. I wonder if theres any of there engines around that can be swapped in to our trucks?

say claybodie :
these 2LT's were available in USA ( very small markets - Texas area LA state /Oklahoma for 2 or 3 years 1984-86 Even heard of some available in Cali and Pacific NW - depending on who you ask that has knowledge - they were never popular and very rare in USA from dealer but yes they were available in micro quantities - the 2 L /2.4litre non turbo was available in USA 1984 replacing the prior diesel from 3rd generation pickup 's 2.2L non turbo diesel - owned one of these - was a very good truck - only 2wd drive - weak 5th gear - but best I ever got was maybe very low 30's highway - but usually 65-70 mph speeds - not terrible for the early 80's
you find a few 2LT's floating around on eBay - they were much more popular in Canada - but cancerous now - internal parts are hard to come by on this side of the pond - you are in central NY closer to a border - you may be able to get some needed parts outta Quebec - but very pricey - UK is a good place for gaskets at a decent price - Pacific NW is a good place to get your ip rebuilt as long as in rebuildable shape - otherwise if you need new may cost more than your purchase price
Mine xtra cab 2LT was purchased outta BC - but a seized engine - as mentioned on your other post - looking for a good shoppe around who can help me either bore the rather deep gouge outta no .4 or sleeve - already has oversized pistons so was rebuilt once before - any new to me small 4 cyl diesel I would complete teardown and rebuild - too many mid 80's stuff is dicey now reaching antique status
good luck
cheers:
