86 4runner Tailgate window help
Hello,
I have an 86 4runner and the rear window has worked like a charm for years until today! When it is all the way up it will only work with the key not the switch. Once it is lowered with the key, even a 1/4 inch, the switch works again. I looked at it and messed with the switches in the gate for an hour and found that there is a a switch that when the window is up, kills power to the switch I think? It is pictures below with the pointer on it. When this is unplugged everything works fine again. So the question I have is what is the purpose for switch and will anything get damaged or burned up If It gets left unplugged?

I didn't take mine apart but had the same problem. It turned out to be the windshield wiper. It wasn't locking in place. Once i pushed it up a little my switch started working.

Could you have hit the rear window lock switch by accident?? I know I have in the past
Have you checked the switch is fused in the closed position allowing the window relay to always have a connection to ground.
When closed the switch provides a connection to ground.
I just buttoned my rear hatch back up or I would double check.
That is the switch that keeps the window from being raised when the hatch is open.
So if your careful and remember that and you have no problems with any of the switches you should be fine.
Now this is off the top of my head I might be wrong!!
Should be easy to find another switch.

I have taligate window issues too
My window works fine except for right at the top on the passenger's side. It doesn't seem to like to go all the way up. Anyone else have this issue? Is it a problem with the track? Anyone have any advice?

Wyoming9,
Thanks for the input. The switch that keeps the window from going up with the latch open is near the latch mechanism. The switch that I am pointing to has something to do with limiting the how far the window goes up...I think? When the window is all the way up there is a "gear" that is beveled at the end which causes the switch to open, cutting power to the motor, but for some reason mine is cutting out too early and not allowing the window to go back down. I believe the switch I'm pointing to is suppose to cut power to the up side of the switch only. Anyone any ideas?
Thanks

Can you adjust it so it works like it should.
That is a red wire with blue stripe??
It is called the back window limit switch.
When that switch closes it allows that circuit to go to ground it goes to pin 2 on the rear window relay.
So when the window reaches the upper limit the switch opens breaking the circuit.
If someone has not swapped a rear hatch from another year.
I will need to pull mine apart and look.
