86 22re crank but no start
Ok some background info. Working on an 86 4runner 22re with a manual tranny. I put a transmission in it when my gf inherited it and she drove it for a year with little more than minor problems. The timing cover began leaking profusely so I decided to do the works… timing, headgasket… I got it reassembled and it fired up the 2nd time cranking it over. Ran decent but was leaking fuel from the injector rings going into the intake. It died as soon as I lifted my foot off the throttle. I removed the upper plenum and replaced the seals for the injectors which resolved the fuel leak. Now I cannot get it to fire up.
I have good spark and good fuel pressure, injectors seem to be functioning correctly, and I have quadruple checked timing. As far as I can tell at tdc the crank and cam marks are all lined up in approx. the 12 o’clock position with the rotor pointing at approx.. 10-11 o’clock.
While cranking there is a faint (what I would describe as) popping as if its trying to fire with the random backfire but will not start up. Could it be 180 out? Or is that ruled out by the fact it fired up on the initial attempt? I also removed the tps and have read in some posts this could be a cause for concern.
If anyone has experience with something similar to this and would be willing to point me in a direction to focus I would greatly appreciate it. I don’t have much time after work so if I’d like to narrow down the areas of interest so I can get this thing back on the road asap.
Thanks for any input in advance
