I run my V6 at 3k RPM (70mph) and my oil guage stays at the halfway mark,so I guess Im doing good then.I wont even attempt to run it at the RPMS you guys are talking about.

that could be true..but i've drove my truck at about 3500rpms for a while..(bout..maybe 100miles)..with some downshifting to around 4200 rpms..screamin up some big hills lol..and my pressure on my mechanical gauge was still reading about 50-60psi
im just runnin 10w30..but i usually run some 20w50.. it cuts down on leaks..runs higher pressure..and should help with bearings...of course i could help bearings even more by throwin some synthetic Royal purple in it......

I've been running synthetic 5w30 in the truck since I got it with 100k on it. It's now got 160+k, no issues at all.

Not to get into a deeper discussion than this already is but at what point do you consider a 22 to be high milage? I switched from 10w30 syn to the 20w50 because of a little rod slap (that's what it sounded like any way) at start up. It only did it when cold and there was only one or two smack noises. With the 20-50 the noise is gone.

no way.. when you run them harder they build up a tolerance!
im jk, and yea i know that the harder you run it the harder it will break
the valves dont float untill about 7500rpm.

Dude, I think you're smok'n some bad crack!! A stock 22RE won't even turn 7,500 under power, you *might* get one to that RPM on a missed shift or sitting in the driveway stomp'n the throttle to floor, but I'd have to see it happen.
The valves will start floating about 5,600. A stock cam in a 22RE will not flow enough to get to 7,500 grand!!
As I said before, I've hit 6K on my tach in the dunes with my stock 22RE with a DT header, but I only did it a few times and the power had dropped off at 5,000 RPMs.
Luckily, the stock 22RE is a non-interference engine and even if you float some valves they probably won't smack a piston.
If I'm wrong here, enlighten me... I'm all ears!!

as for the 7000rpm i said 22r witch doesnt have a rev limiter besides valve float. and the motor wasnt stock, i said it had no internal mods besides a cam. they will turn 7k!
do you even have a tach? lol jk

Good question Junkers.
Well, you probably heard PISTON slap, not rod slap at cold starts. Bad or worn rod bearings usually cause a "knock".
I think when a 22 starts to use (burn) a quart of oil every 2500 miles, you've got a tired engine. At that point, running 20-50 probably ain't gunna hurt it. And, if you've got some loose parts (piston slap, loose mains, rods, etc, running a thicker oil will definitely quiet it down.
TJMWO,
gNARLS.

So far my truck doesn't burn any oil, it does leak a little but that's because I was stupid and didn't change the rear main when I did the clutch...

You know this RPM topic has come up many times, and there is always some magic engine out there that turns up magic RPMs "all day long".... but, I know two very experienced Toyota engine builders that build professional race engines that win races "all day long", and get paid big bucks for them. Both said the same thing... on a stock 22RE, the valves will float at around 5,600 RPM. Now if you know more than they do, great. But, I'm going to put my money on those two experts!!
oh and if the valves floated at 5600 (which they don't) why would toyota put the rev limiter at 6250?
hahaha i like that one. yea after that i stay away from those big ones
