Something else to factor into your equation is the cost of a new auto tranny after it burns it from trying to run in over drive when it can't. For manuals your clutch will last much much longer when properly geared especially when wheeling. 300 bucks is nothing compared to a new tranny.

Again, these are only the "tangible" factors. To me, not feeling practically handicapped in traffic or on the street is just as, if not more, important. I no longer feel like I have to "Fred Flintstone" it to get on the freeway. A trip to the Bay Area made me feel like I should be running with my hazards on!

All Trail-Gear stuff for me, since I'm about five miles from them.

Irony: I own a 4Runner. I live practically next door to Trail Gear and Marlin.

...and it's a 2wd.

Can't speak to the V6, and speedo difference will depend on what gears you had originally.

alrighty. well truck came stock with 225/75 according to the inside face of the driver side door, so 4.10s. How is the power difference with the 22re and 5.29s? you said you were auto with 31s, too?

About a 13.5% difference (faster speedo), then.

LOVE the 5.29's! Much more streetable. Haven't tried towing yet.

When I got my truck it had 32x11.50 tires on it, it's got a 3.0, 5spd and what I'm assuming are stock gears. I find it to be pretty peppy on the road I guess, though I've never known it with any other tire or gear combination.

It is my DD and I do do highway driving on it, but I find I rarely put it into 5th gear because I can usually get it up to nearly 110km/h in 4th while still keeping my revs under 3500 or so.

I don't plan on ever running anything bigger than a 33" tire. Would 4.88's be the most ideal gears for me?

Yes IMO. If the area you live in is mountainous, you may want to entertain the idea of 5.29's.

Yep. I run 4.88's and 33's Brings you to stock plus a little extra gearing.

I bet you have 4.56's its not as drastic of a change. Especially for us 3vze owners

Not geared low enough that I can't drive on the hwy. Last time I went on a roadtrip up north I had it at 130-140km/h most of the way

Ok, 1st mpg report = nothing's changed so far. I'm still ~18 mpg's, but I have to wonder if breaking in tight gears would attribute to that. Also, spent a fair amount of time idling in the garage while I tried to figure out yet another idle issue. Will continue to track...

Just got a '92 Pickup, 3vze, 5spd, 4WD. Which gears did these come with, 4.56's, or 4.10's?

depend the package level.... look at the axle code on the door jam.

G244 = 4.88
G254 = 4.56
G284/G282 = 4.30
G294/G292 = 4.10

How would that effect using 4wd if only the rear gears are swapped out?

What is a good site to buy a 5.29 kit from?
