Wicked, I'm gonna see if I can net a diff like that, cause it would save me re-gearing costs.

I just bought a front 4.56 ADD diff, so one to the rear now.

with my 32x11.5x15 BFG A/T KO's and 4.56 gears, the Garmin says my speedo is dead on accurate . . . I got both thirds at the U-Pull-It in Virginia Beach for $30 (I think they only charged me for one)

with this logic why doesnt he just jump to 5.29s... ya it may take him a lil longer to get to speed but he'll be ready for that SAS and 37s. 4.56 and 31s were a perfect combination when i was IFS

Of course it would be the "perfect" combination, toyota spec'd the trucks that way...of course toyota also undergeared some of their trucks.

The 22re could use the 4.88's!
Don't forget, us "lucky" guys with the 3vz have a good chunk of extra power compaired to the 22re.

Frankly, I'm perfectly happy to poke along the highway at 90km/h getting 26mpg. I don't mind that the truck is slow, but I feel I'm out of the powerband, which is annoying. For instance, I can go up hills around in 3rd if I'm doing 60km/h, but any slower and I have to drop down a gear- then I'm revving the crap out of the motor.

I'm pretty certain that i will stick with a 31x10.5 tire for the fuel economy (every pound extra on the tires is worth 10 pounds in the bed of the truck!), and furthermore, I can easily find spares in small rural shops should I get two flats. I might go to MTs (Firestone Destination MTs), but with the exception of deep snow, I haven't found anything my truck wouldn't get me through now that I have that rear locker.

Alpi's wants $350 for a 2-pinion, 4.56 rear diff, that's almost as much as re-gearing ($150 for gears, $300 labour). Crap, that's alot.

Aplis is WAY to expensive!

Where were you quoted 300 for labor for re-gearing a rear diff? Ryan at disturbed (he set my gears) charges 150 labor a diff to regear/rebuild.
You might be able to get some gears from him too.

I know Alpi's has stupid prices, but I wouldn't pay that much to get my sister out of a Turkish prison!

I may go down there, with cash and see if they will drop the price to $250, or $300 with some other stuff thrown in as well (door shell or something).

Jay: What's the number for you're gear guy? I may want to go that route as I haven't figured out how to duplicate the backlash when installing an lunchbox locker, getting a shop to do that costs $80.

I just did this swap, and the difference is completely amazing. I love it so much more now that I have the 4.56's. Look around, I bought a whole parts truck, complete with front and rear 4.56 gearsets, for 500...

I wish I could find a toyota for that much... Up here, its pretty damn hard to get one, even wrecked for under a grand or two. Alpis seems to snatch them ALL up and charge WAY to much for parts

yeah, my family called me crazy for spending a grand total of 800 on a parts truck that included everything but good body panels, engine/trans, and door panels... I got the rest of the gray interior, the gear sets, fuel tank, power steering gear box, a set of 1/4 tread bf Goodrich A/Ts on the sr5 rims, and and the xtra cab glass and rear window.

not to mention the Class III reciever, steering column with all the switches still attached, heavy duty leaf springs, my new and STRAIGHT frame, and a cherry SR5 cluster. no fade at all on the needles, they are still bright orange! do you think I was crazy???

sorry for the hijack!

I drive my '86 daily, with 31" tires I can bark the tires shifting into second gear at full throttle.. I drove my sisters 3.0 with stock tires and couldn't even hardly burn the tires in first gear with a clutch dump... I'd bet money my 22R has more torque.

all in the gearing my friend. at the fly wheel, 3vze has more torque @ idle than the 22RE does peak.
