3VZE to 22RE Swap
Hey all, I am considering swapping a 5spd 22RE in place of my auto 3VZE. Please refrain from flaming and telling me to do a 5VZE swap instead. The reality is, I have a freshly rebuilt 22RE, a complete (rusted out) donor 1993 22RE 5spd 4Runner, and a 1994 3VZE automatic 4Runner in very good condition.
I am aware that the engine mounts will need to be cut/welded. Though I don't have much welding or fabricating experience myself, I can get help for this part.
The part that worries me the most is wiring. In my time searching the forums, I found one post stating that the 1993 22RE engine harness will mate with the 1994 3VZE body harness. Can anyone corroborate this? If anyone could direct me to the specific harness plugs I should worry about I'd greatly appreciate it. I'd like to be able to locate them in both vehicles, take some pictures, and compare. Hopefully there's as little cutting and splicing as possible.
Another unknown is the fuel system. I'm guessing that the fuel pumps between the 4 and 6 cylinder vary in volume/pressure? Are the pumps themselves compatible between tanks?
Off the top of my head, here's what I think I need to switch over:

Off the top of my head, here's what I think I need to switch over:
- Pedal assembly
- Rear driveshaft
- Clutch master cylinder
- Clutch hardlines, softlines
- Fuel pump (?)
- ECU
- Engine, wiring harness, transmission, transfer case, cross member

Since you have both vehicles look at both ECU`s see if the plugs are all the same .
I doubt it is going to be plug and play some things will need to be repined .
The best way is to have the Electrical wiring Diagrams for both years
I can understand using what you have on hand it is just like any other swap.
What makes it hard is not many people go in this direction .
Best of luck

I dont know the 89-94 as much but from past experience, the fuel pumps seem to have the same part numbers so fuel pump isnt going to be an issue.
If it was me, I would just swap the entire harness from one end to the other end. Looks to me like your ECU is set up to run 6 injectors instead of 4 so I am going to say it wont work.
Usually Toyota has dimples that just need drilled out to install the clutch pedal assembly and I have swapped those out in the past, not a hard job to do.
I would bet you have a dimple for your clutch assembly and it will mount up easily. The lines just run across the top of the firewall.
I am not sure about the tranny mounts but I understand they are the same.
You have 4 harnesses, Headlight harness, Main harness, Injector harness, and Tail light harness. To do it correctly you are going to need to pull the dash and most of the interior out. To get an idea what is involved https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...4-88-a-278925/ Other then the motor mounts, it should swap over fairly easy if you do a complete wire swap. You might luck out and not have to change the Tail light fuel pump harness but Toyota did change plugs from year to year.
To remove the dash on a 89-94 you start on the passenger side and work your way over to the drivers side. The only hardest part is getting the heater controls set correctly. I just use spray paint to know where the cables go back to.
If I was in your shoes, it wouldnt concern me and would jump in and do it with two completer trucks. Motor mounts would be my biggest concern.

We all have our strong areas of skills
To me I am pretty sure the cab harness could be merged at the ecu .
While Terry would pull the whole dash apart and change the complete harnesses .
The motor mounts would be the easy part for me.
Neither approach is right or wrong just how different people approach things .
You have to figure out just what your most comfortable doing
Because both the engine mounts and cross member are different there may be quite a bit of installing and measuring till it gets set in place for the last time.

I'm not flaming, just wondering why you don't sell the stuff you have, to finance the 5VZE? I don't know what the yards local to you are like, but there was a T100 in the yard local to me with the complete engine, that would have probably been less than $500. You could probably do the same. I don't think that the fab work/ expense of the swap for the 5VZE at that point would be any worse than your 22RE undertaking, and your end result would be much better.
