Hmmmm......okay. I know you don't know what's wrong with it. That's why we're posting.....to try and help figure it out. But, there's this problem....confusion....a little detail I wonder if you could help clear up.???? Why are you thinking it's throwing a code 52?
We'll all help you figure it out and get it fixed, chief, but you gotta be able to answer some questions or we can't do anything. Unless you wanna fly me there? I could use a vacation.

more confusion in this thread lol

If you don't know anyone with a scanner.....or can't read the CEL flashing.....
Take it to a toyota dealership, have them pull the code, and then say have a nice day! (of course act like you want them to do the work, but then you just go home and update us on the code they pulled!!!)

all you need is a paperclip or piece of wire. I'm sure you've got one or the other somewhere inside your home or appartment. Use the search feature and find the procedure to check for codes.

haha yeah at least 4 grand...just to take a peak

Good point vital, I forgot about the paper clip jump trick. Pretty much you just take a paper clip, jump pins A and B on the OBD1 connector, and then turn your ignition to
'on' if your CEL works, it will flash in a sequence...

But you said your CEL light doesn't work, so you definitely need to have that light working to do the jumper test

start trying something and keep us posted....epic thread failure ahead despite everyone's attempts lol

Are you sure the CEL doesn't work? Replace the bulb and see if it turns on with the ignition on, but engine not running. This would be my first problem to resolve....

My suggested starting point...

your 4runner is 17 years old, it makes sense that the bulbs are more than likely burned out. starting point on learning what is wrong with your ride is making sure you check the codes held by the ECU.

it'll run you about 30 bucks in bulbs and an hour to change all of your cluster lights. it is a very basic task and you don't have to have any more mechanical skill other than knowing how to turn a screwdriver and a good copy of how to get the instrument cluster out.

http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1993/body.../9instrume.pdf

bulbs you will need are size 194, i suggest 194LL.

NOTE: the lights on the back of your cluster are in black holders that turn either 1/4 to 1/2 turn for removal and installation. Also, you may want to get two 194 size bulbs in green.

I'm sorry. not trying to be mean. But if you can't figure out how to check for codes... than you need to take it to a shop and have them check. Come back when you can give us FACTS not speculations.

He can't check if his CEL is burned out. But I agree, can't be tellin us code 52 when you can't even check for codes at the moment.

This is what I think you need to do. Pull the instrument cluster, swap in a bulb you KNOW works. If it still wont come on then there are other things to look at.

That is free.

I went back and reread the entire thread. You say you've had the vehicle for 3yrs. In all that time you've never seen the CEL come on. Forgive, but I have to ask......do you even know where the CEL is located? If so, and you've never seen it come on (even you when simply turn the key to ignition), and in all the three years it's been running mostly good until now (???), and now you're having screwy electrical issues and a loss in running power (though it's idling "smooooooth"), then I'd have to agree with replacing the bulb before doing anything else. Gotta make sure the ECU is doing it's thing and hopefully it will give us all some kind of code to work with. On the bright side, you may not have a code (which for you would mean no knock sensor issue) and just having some funky electrical issue and minor sensor issue. The fact that it runs good at idle is a fairly good indicator there's nothing in the way of a mechanical issue.

So, again....do you know where the CEL is?

BTW, I just want to say, have some hope. There's no reason to give up on your Yota because of your present circumstance. Many here have brought their Yota's back from the dead and figure it to be well worth it. I could share my own stories, but save that for tea time. (Or, beer.....whichever you prefer)

I swear I am THIS close to removing this thread from existance.

You have been told several times what to do to pull a code.

You have been given reference threads, complete with pictures, on what to do. Take the paperclip out, stick it in the E1 and Te1 ports, and count the times the CEL blinks.

If you say you don't know what to do one more time, I'm removing this thread. Sorry if I am sounding harsh, but to me it looks like we are getting jacked around.
