I was wondering, is there a more durable engine you can swap with the 3.0 v6? Like a gm 4.3 or something. Would want it to bolt right up to bell housing and motor mounts. I imagine I could make most of the existing wiring harness work. Has anyone ever? Or does anyone know anything about it? Thanks in advance....

haha... you have to SWAP the wiring harness and computer if your going to another EFI motor.

but i did look at the 4.3 swap once and if you did the TBI vortec it would be a good reliable motor.

I figured that much. Was wondering what all is involved, are the computers plug and play or would i have to swap the whole harness? And which engine would bolt right up? I am not wanting to hack it up. Just a nice clean swap. Or even a carburated engine!

swap whole harness and ecu, requires modifications to stock gauge cluster circuit board if you want those to work. i have been looking at an engine swap project myself and came to the conclusion that i want it to be easy and clean too. after looking at the toyota 3.4, lexus 4.0, chevy 4.3, and chevy small block (372 or 350) i decided a carburated small block would be simple, powerful, and fits with some transmission mount modification, electric fan conversion, fuel pump mod, and a set of autometer gauges to replace the cluster. my favorite part is it eliminates 90% of the wiring under the hood.

I would like to get a torquey v6. Something that would bolt up to my trans. Carburated v6 would be easiest but wich one? I could get most of the gauges to work that way. Plus I would build it myself while I kill this 3.0 So it would be stout. Just not sure if there is one that would fit like I want?

there is a chevy 3.8 v6 carburated that was used in the early 80's 'c' series i think... might be worth looking into. i know that there is an chevy 3.4 v6 efi/tbi that was used in late 80's early 90's blazers and stuff... if you could a tbi v6 that would be great cause you get better mileage than carburated and the simplicity of one injector, tps, and o2 sensor that could hook up to a flash module to it. i think there is a carburated version of the 4.3 but most are efi.

And before you get into carbs... check your local emissions requirements since carbs have been all but eliminated on vehicles after 1990 or so. Swapping out EFI for a carb is nearly impossible without a whole lot of hoops to jump through.

toyota 3.4 bolts up to your tranny, reliable ? mine has 314k on it and all i do is abuse it.
if you go gm 4.3 will need to have an adapter to get tranny to hook up. Do a search there are tons of swaps here and at pirate4x4.com. good luck

For bolt-up, the Toyota 3.4 is the easiest swap. The hardest part is figuring out the wiring harness, which is more time-consuming than anything else.

As for engine swap you can do anything. I'm in the process of doing the 3.4 swap. then planning a 1uz lexus engine swap as my next project. But you can do anything. Depending on the modifications you feel like doing. Like Rob said the 3.4 is the same bolt pattern for the transmission you use the 3.0 engine mount brackets. Mechanic ally its real easy. I'm on the wiring now. I will let ya know when its going.

I`m pulling my 3.0 now. Does the wiring harness that comes to the engine from Pas side fender unplug somewhere ?

Off the top of my head I see the BH and motor mounts...

Plus, it'll get VARY cramped in the bay.

Not saying it can't be done by no means, but it'll be a tight fit.

Then there's the head gasket problems...

But the Wiki page seems to have some legit solutions...


So that's; Finding, moding, PMing and fitting...

The 3.4 is a bolt in and just wiring it up...

Ya i suppose that makes sense.
It just seems to me like the extra 2 grand you would save on engine cost would make it worth the trouble. Not to mention there was a turbo model of that engine as well so the sky is the limit on horsepower.
