Oh yeah, that dang pipe that goes in the back of the head is tough to get to. I had every bolt in except for the one that holds the pipe bracket. I had to lay across the engine, balance and stick my fingers straight down from the top. One slow turn at a time. Using a mirror. Tricky.

That connector on top of the tstat housing is broken on mine also. looks like someone took the plastic off the sender and put a spade connector on the wire then plugged it into the sendor. It works just fine. I dont have the cable for my camera to post a picture. But I think that if you get the plastic cap off the sender you will see that it is just a male spade under it. then put a female on the wire you were holding and plug it in.

That plug you asked about in front of the oil filter is not connected on mine. Dont know what it goes to, and must not be needed. Mine is running fine.

I have an extra connector as well it sits right next to the cold start injector and was folded up a bit. I think it's for the A/C idle up...I think???

1st off, post up a pic of the connector in question.
2nd....I don't see an A/C compressor in your early pics so Im going to assume you don't have A/C. If memory serves me correctly, that connector is gray. If you don't have A/C it just kinda exists there not connected to anything.

I took a pic of mine for someone else a while ago, I am searching for that pic now.

I believe the wire in question is the one next to the "Cold Start Injector"

Looks as if the wire in question could go on top and is just dangling by the oil filter, not sure if it could stretch to the front for the A/C clutch...maybe though.

92 the one you have circled does not have the wire clip holding it on just the plastic tappy thingy.

tmcorbin-good idea with the spade connector. If I strike out at the junkyard, that's what I'll do.

Lumpy-That could be it, but mines a little different. I have another connector that wasn't hooked up to anything before that is near the area of yours too. I marked it as empty. It is shaped different though. The mystery one is rectangular and has a wire clip, just like the injector connectors. Inside are two, side by side, "T" shaped terminals.

the connector in this pic should go to a sensor on the intake the measures egr' line that connects into the intake.. i bevlive all california models will have this sensor

Hopefully I can help out with that mastery connector! I'm pretty sure it goes into the back of the idle air control that is located under the throttle body. I just had mine off and almost forgot to hook it up.

BoostedRNR- Wahoo! That's exactly what it was. That thing is hard to see.

Got everything installed. Filled up with fluids. Valves adjusted. Timing light ready.

Hit the starter, she whined for about ten seconds, then...............












IT'S ALIVE!!!

Whew. I'm really stoked that it started first try. I let it get up to normal operating temperature, which was detected by the temperature sensor and wiring pigtail I picked up out of a corola in the junkyard. That's how I ended up getting around the broken one I had.

Pulled the valve cover back of and readjusted the valves. I was surprised that some had actually changed. I guess that's why you're supposed to check.

Buttoned it back up, fired it up, rechecked the timing-still spot on. Time for a quick road test.

Up the street a little way and it ran like a dream. Better than it ever has.

It's still not a speed demon, but it feels stronger throughout every gear.

Even before the headgasket went and the fourth cylinder stopped firing, I've always had a slight miss at constant highway speeds--gone.

I'm still crossing my fingers and will for another thousand miles or so. But for now I feel great.

Everyone out there, THANKS! You guys really helped. If I didn't use all the tricks like:

timing cover template for bolts

knowing about the secret hidden bolts like the one in the top of the timing cover

taking time to label everything and take pics, it would have been nightmare.

As it was it all went fairly smooth. Again, thanks for all of your help.

To all the first timers out there, it with yotatech help it can get done.
