22r hot rod
i just got a pre 85 22r motor from a friend and i was planning on rebuilding it
i took off the valve cover and and it had the twin timimng chain sprocket at the front of the cam.
i was wondering a few things
1. will the 20r head bolt right up?
2. will the 22re head bolt right up?
3. if 22re head fits will i have to change it to a twin timing chain?
thanks

They are the same engine model, the heads should be swappable with minor adjustments if any at all.
But...since these engines are so cheap why go through the hassle? You're not going to see any difference in performance.

From my understanding, the 20R head on a 22r block is supposed to flow better and maybe bump the compression up a little. Kinda like with hondas a b16 head on a b18c block is a poor mans type-r motor. There's lots of info on the 22r/20r combo if you search around.

i figured it would raise the compression like a ls block with the b16 vtec head
it would be like a ls-vtec yota truck
haha
but if went with the 20r head i wouldnt be able to run fuel injection
which i have the setup for
and i would have to run carbureators
and i would want to run dual sidedrafts
butt those intake manifolds are so hard to find
and are really costly brand new

20r's and early 22rs are interchangable. after 85 the deck hight changed on the block and therfore almost nothing is interchangeable. the dual row chains were used on 22r's until 82. after 83 teh 22r heads have 3 or 4 more holes on the intake side to accomadate the efi manifold

im not sure what year this motor is
or wat it even came out of
all i know is that it had the dual row timing chain when i took off the valve cover

ok mnot a hijacking but a honda like what the question
the b16 head fits and makes a better b18?? i dont get it
get a ls b18 block and drop a b16 dohc head on it and smoke a stock b18ls vtec? now thats some info
back on topic....
what about just taking a b16 vtec head and drilling it to fit a 22r block??? it could work with a lil help from welder and grinder right?

there are 2 types of b18s
there are the b18b's
known as the ls-non-vtec motor that comes out in the normal integras
then theres the well known b18c's
known as the gsr. this motor is the well known vtec motor
so the guys take the ls blocks and put b16 heads on it. raising cmpression and putting vtec on what was a non-vtec motor. that combo is known as the ls vtec
another common combination is taking the b20 nonvtec crv motor and putting the b16 head on it. doing the same thing to the b20 is known as a b20 vtec.
putting a b16 head on a 22r block would be a miracle and i dont think would ever happen.
maybe if someone had enough skill to make a hybrid 22r head thats twin cam with vtec technology!

I'd love to see someone convert a 4-valve head for use with a 22R series...
Remember that the lower end is a long-stroke motor designed for torque. Piston speeds (RPM) are going to be somewhat limited by the stroke.

PS: Some people put H22 heads on H23 blocks, same concept.
A VVT-i Head swap would be sweet for our trucks. Maybe we can snatch one from an is250 or something? haha.

a 22re would probably respond well to a 12v setup- 2 intake, 1 exhaust.
delayed opening / faster ramp with a tad more lift on one intake valve and simultaneous closing... swirl and strong intake pulse.... slow ramp up on the exhaust, quick close.
I wonder....

it would be awesome

well, the only problem is you'd have to call it a 22R-FE or if you went with a wide angle valve (more than likely) 22R-GE. that would be absolutely amazing. I myself am looking into a 3VZFE swap. believe it or not, the DOHC setup adds about 40 HP and is a major bump up in fuel economy on the SOHC 3VZE.

the 20r head will bolt up to earlier blocks with the double row. the pre 85 or 86 block with dome pistons will work. the head will have to be milled down. I'm building one now.
