1994 extra cab v6 4wd - $3500--ended up paying $2500

I'm a new member of this forum, and I appreciate the opportunity of being able to ask for help here. Aside from that, one of my in-laws has a 1994 ex cab v6 4wd manual trans that was a hand-me-down from another family member, and he's wanting $3500 for it. It has 339k miles on it, body is great condition. Interior is good condition except for driver side seat that needs reupholstered. Leaking a little brake fluid, and after driving it you have to push clutch in pretty hard to shift (slave cylinder?). It was a one owner truck and very well kept. Is it worth what he's asking? I know these trucks are hard to come by, but I thought 3500 was a little high, but that's why im here asking for advice. any help would be much appreciated

thanks

Ya thats a little high. Offer 2,500. Thats alot of miles, doesnt mean its a bad truck, but still thats a lot of miles. I paid 3K for my 89 3.0 4X4 with 200,000 on it 7 or 8 years ago. It still runs but you see were im going with that.

Sounds like it needs a clutch, its previous clutch job probably used a shucks clutch or somthing cheesy. Atleast thats always been the case with a hard pedal's. Its the clutch basket that makes the pedal hard.

I paid 900 bucks for my truck. it needed brake work and a clutch as well. My truck has 121k miles and it also a slight valve tick. Just something to compare your purchase too. At 340k miles have the head gaskets been replaced?? just something to ask/bargain with

I bought my 92 x-cab 3.0 4x4 for $3500, but it was a one owner who I've personally known all of my life, it only has 150k on it and has had a new long block installed in it at 79k due to an idiot at Toyota dealership who didn't put oil back in it after a servicing! Haha but anyhow the body of mine is In decent shape, has a small dent in bottom half of one door and one small dent in the bed, the clear cost is starting to come off the hood & roof, interior is fine on mine, so hopefully that'll help you maybe not feel so bad for paying so much for a 20 year old truck lol, they're not as common to come by as the use to be!

well, i ended up getting the truck for 2500, which i felt like was a pretty good deal! since it been a one owner (which i know very well), i decided to go ahead and get it. Now it's time to start working on it here and there, which is the fun part! Im new to this stuff, but very eager to learn how to work on it. I would like to put a little money in the trim work on the body, get a spray in bed liner, new tires, re-tint the windows (old tint wore out), get the seats re-upholstered.

Where is a good place to get parts for these older model trucks? May have to put a new clutch in it pretty soon.

thanks,
clay

it needs two new back tires, so im going to replace all four, but would like a little more aggressive look. it has 235/75/15 right now, whats the biggest i could go without rubbing?

also, is there a particular place that's good for these truck parts or is it best to just shop around?

Read the Epic 3VZE Thread in my sig line before you do anything!

As far as tire size, I'd recommend 31x10.5 Firestone Desination M/T. Going up in tire size is a slippery slope that leads to lower mpg, lessens acceleration, & starts making you think about spending money on gearset changes~ Many times, you can find a deal on tires/wheel combos on ebay or locally that are cheaper than even buying a single WHEEL from the dealer :-) I have FJ Cruiser wheels on my truck that I paid $275 for WITH TIRES...got them on ebay 2 years ago. You have to wade through a TON of crap to find those deals....

All parts are still available from the dealer; some are reasonable, others quite expensive. I've seen no rhyme or reason to the wildly different pricing. Gary Smith at Newnan Toyota in GA offers FANTASTIC discounts to forum members & very reasonable shilping fees. Some stuff you'll find yourself going through slim pickings a junk yards/pull-aparts. On all electrical/electronic items/sensors, it's BEST by a wide margin to stick with Denso OEM.

MarlinCrawler & WabFab (regular posters here) are fantastic sources for 4x4 parts, transmissions, clutches, differentials, etc. One or the other (or both) stock great rebuilt brake calipers & locking hubs.

This info is pulled from my own years of experience, the absolutely UNBELIEVABLE amount of knowledge stored in this forum & the members who are so generous with their time.

Rabbit thanks for the info, greatly appreciated, and def helps a lot! A truck with this many miles is starting to worry me! 339,000 miles on the original motor, what would i be looking at price wise if i had to get it rebuilt/replaced? All of this is a learning experience for me, so ill be spending lots of time on here reading! These trucks are hard to find and easy to sell in this area I live in, and ive already had people stop by my office and ask about it. If the price is right, i may flip it, and look for something a little newer/less miles!

thanks

You could rebuild it yourself for under $500; pay someone to do it & you could pay as much as $4,000 *yikes*. I rebuilt mine 6 years ago for @ $2,800, but that included buying a lot of cool tools, including a $1,800 air compressor~

If you don't have any major issues & it doesn't smoke a lot; you're probably good for a while as long as you take care of it. Whatever you do, NEVER overheat it! I recommend using only Toyota RED coolant & flushing/changing it annually, every 2 years at the most.

I see you're in Arkansas; we have a few members there. Perhaps you could hook up with someone locally & pick their brain. Try thook; he's pretty darned smart about these vehicles: https://www.yotatech.com/members/11652.html

Well bud judging by the looks of that truck it's got 339,000 mostly highway miles on it! Looks to me like you got a hell of a deal to me bud! I'd be willing to take it off your hands, l I have one not as slick as that one but not beat up with only 159,000

This may sound crazy, but i had a guy i know call me today and offered me 3600 cash for the truck. his son totaled out his car and he heard i just got ahold of an older yota and his son had to have it, and i couldnt pass up the money!

rabbit i appreciate your help, the info you gave me and led me on to helped tremendously! and im in the market for a little newer model with lower miles. soon as my z71 comes out of the shop (tranny went out) im gonna sell it and find me a yota!

also, im from central arkansas, just south of russellville! i would of been willing to do some business with you but at 3600 i just couldnt pass it up!

thanks for all the help,
ill be back on here looking at builds and learning as much as i can before i make my next purchase!

It's alright man I understand and it is hard to pass up that kind of money, I know where a 1992 one owner is in west little rock that looks brand new nearly, new tires, the truck has a little over 200k on it but it belongs to an old man and he had ran it hot several years ago and had a new engine put in it and it only has about 50k on it! If your interested I can see about getting you a phone #, he lives down the road from a friend of mine in west little rock and that's how I come to know about it, and there are some HUGE deer in and around white river, a man I work with owns a little land over there and I've been with him fishing, never hunted it but have seen several monster bucks, my little brother is in big island deer club and he has killed a few decent deer there no 140 classes but some nice buck!
