1993 Toyota 4Runner Slipping

I've had a problem with my 93 4runner staying in high gear when you put it in drive. Once you put it in drive it revs up high and it will eventually catch it with itself and start moving. Usualy I put it in 1st then 2nd then drive to take off. The thing about it is that its been doing this for almost 4 years so I'm wondering if it really is the transmission because my thought is if it is the transmission then it wouldve already went completely out??? I've researched and found talk about a shift solenoid...

I was wondering if someone could shed some light on this..

Thanks.

Are you having any problems with the speedometer or odometer, as well?
