1993 Toyota 22RE ticking after valve adjustment

Just bought this truck a few months ago and this weekend I decided to check the valve adjustment.

The truck sounded great before, at least at idle, considering the exhaust is loosely attached to the header and there's a .50cal size hole in the muffler lol!

I followed the FSM http://www.eagleoneresearch.com/manual/ToyotaMaual.pdf
Page 32

I'm positive I was on the proper stroke while doing the adjustment!
I even rotated the engine 4-5 times double checking the clearance after adjustment on both sets of valves on both strokes. I also made an effort to keep the feeler gauge flush with the valve stem/rocker while adjusting

Before the adjustment I could not even get the proper size feeler gauge between rocker and valve stem. I wouldn't be surprised if PO just made them 'tight'

Should I be worried about the valve noise? Is 'too loose' better than 'too tight'?

Thanks!

Loose is better than tight.

One mans 'ticking' is anothers 'just right'.

I don't know why everybody wants their 22re to run completely silently.

Properly adjusted solid lifter engines seldom do.

Yeah I've heard that these motors are supposed to sound like sewing machines and that's how they like it! Thanks for the reply!

Red face

Then you might have over tightened the valve cover bolts that makes a tapping noise when you do.

No lifters that is a hard habit to break no push rods either

Yes, no lifters or pushrods, but still solid-- no hydraulic lash control.

I guess I should have said solid valve train instead.
