1992 engine vs 1993 engine Temp Sensor Differences on back of intake???

I have a 1992 4runner that I am in the middle of changing the engine in. The engine is the oh so notorious 3.0 v6 and I had (surprise surprise) engine problems so i am changing the motor out with one i picked up out of a 1993 runner. My question is on the back of my original engine there was a single pole connector for a temperature sensor of some kind, and on the 1993 block this sensor in the heater manifold is solid, not cast at ll for any sensor. Anyone have any idea why the newer motor didnt have this extra sensor with 1 wire??
