1990 Pontiac 3.1L V6 into 87 4Runner

OK guys, I've searched, and I'm tired of looking so I'm going right to the source:

I've got an 87 Runner with a 22R/20R something. PO took some serious shortcuts, motor is one pain after the other and does not have the power it needs, or even had from the factory.

My buddy is considering buying my Runner and swapping his 3.1L from his Bonneville (only has 38,000 miles) into the Runner. His Bonneville's body is not holding up well.

Does anyone know of this swap being performed?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure it is FWD. I guess I didn't realize you couldn't use fwd engines.

i am sure anything is possible with a lot of work and effort. You would be better off getting another 22r (carb ) or 22RE (efi).

I know, I know. Money is tight and I really need the dough. Definately don't have the money to put a new motor in it. My buddy wants the truck, and I don't want to sell it to just anybody, only someone that would take care of it.

He's got the engine, just figured it might be a good fit.

the Pontiac 3.1 talk about head gasket issues that's 5 time worse then the 3.slow. swap with a toyota motor or a buick 3.8

You CAN use a front wheel drive motor in a rear wheel drive application. It's gonna take you some work, and I wouldn't do the 3.1. I know you can use FWD in RWD cars, because some rock crawlers, and sports cars use a supercharged Honda Civic SI motor in a rear wheel, or 4WD application.I'm pretty sure they make special mounts, and stuff for that swap, though. Maybe you could look into a supercharged Honda. They have over 300 Horsepower. Just a thought.

Honestly, if I was going to replace the engine it would be with a Toyota motor. The only reason I suggested the 3.1L is because the guy who's interested in it already has the 3.1L with 38K on the clock, and the engine is running great.

Thanks for the info guys.

I understand that he HAS the 3.1....but why not sell that off and get a motor that has been talked about all over the place on toyota forums? Either swap in another 22R with some motor work or a buick3800

That's exactly what the plan is now; let it be his problem. He's gettin' a sweet deal on an awesome 4Runner that has nearly no rust and perfect interior. He's a good friend and I told him I'd sell it to him for $1700. I could probably get close to $3000 around here as is.

Man, I'm gonna regret this for a while, but it's gotta go.

I think I may cry.

I have put a front drive motor in a trk before (not 4WD) , the starter will be on the opposite side but most bellhousings accommadate that one way or the other (at least the GM did) , you may be able to but would imagine you would have no clearence for starter on opposite side as well as a fair amount of mods for drivetrain unless you can have a trans adapter plate made to use OEM tranny .

I'm literally stuck with a 03' Grand Cherokee Overland. I couldn't give it away, even though it is really sweet and awesome off-road. It's a long story, took a job that had a car allowance but the car had to be American-made, 4WD, and newer than 02'. So I figured...Jeep.

Got laid off from the job and now I'm stuck with a monthly payment of $450 and insurance is $70 monthly. I took out a loan to buy the 4Runner and still owe on it, can't afford it.

I truly hate to see it go...but I'll definately own another 4Runner again, no doubt about that.

Trust me, if I could sell they Jeep, it would be gone already.

I owe $18,000 on it and they Blue Book for $17,000. Took it to Carmax, they offered $12,000. I laughed all the way out the door.

Put it on CraigsList as a joke at $13,000..............not ONE call, and I listed it with pictures showing it in nearly new condition.

Like I said, can't GIVE it away.

I thought about rolling it on the interstate, but that may hurt.

It's a really nice truck, runs awesome, comfortable, fast. But it's not a Toy.

Whatayado????

Sell it for 12 g's and refinance the balance of the loan , that way you can afford the payment and keep the Yota
