I want to install a set of rear speakers under the X-Cab windows in my 88, has anyone done this? Does anyone have a pic of what it looks like with the plastic removed? The 6x9" Kappas on my rear deck are toast and I would really like to remove it the deck for now. I do have a new set of Kappa 5.25" component speakers that my ex bought me for a Christmas gift so Im sure I make them work!

i opened mine up and there was a bunch of room for most any size. although you will have to cut the metal to get them to fit- i used a nibbler to do it- worked very well. also you will have to cut an opening in the plastic to get them to fit also- worked ok, i need to put grills on them- i'll punch a hole through the speaker one of these days. i have infinity 5x7 or 6x9's -- i might have some pics - ill check later on.

Yes there is metal behind the plastic, i was gonna just use self tapping screws and cut a hole, but decided to do boxes till i can get the time to install them like zat.

I'll take pics tomorrow, I just got the factory setup out of a junkyard truck. Basically the speakers screw to the grilles/holders which then screw to some plastic nut inserts in the sheet metal.

I had some aftermarkets in there before which worked OK, but no aftermarket sizes fit the "bolt pattern" for the factory speaker mounting points.

Alright, as promised, here are pics.




Obviously I added the XTC foam baffle behind it, but you can still see it's a very simple setup. I don't have measurements for the factory mount points, but it's too big for 5.25 and too small for 6, so unless you have the factory setup, you can't really use them.

Hahaahaha, i was just looking at m newly purchased 89 an here is what I noticed.

I am wired up, but the speakers seem to have been removed and I am missing covers.

Any advice?

The guy who posted the 89 - you can go buy the appropriate covers at a Toyota dealer or at a wrecker (might cost you some $$$) but another options is if you bought some nice 5/8 Birch, or some 3/4 MDF (Birch would be better as you can make it thinner, but it costs more) and you cut them to the exact size of the plastic whole with the rounded corners, and then reinforced the lip that you screw to with maybe some wood behind it or something like that, you could make excellent speaker mounting points. I myself just have the stock covers which I cut round holes in to fit a speaker. They will take a 6" speaker (not 6 1/2" though) which is what I have - I have JL Audio 6" speakers in there and it fights fine - you cut it close to the latch though but it works great.
