hello , i got a 1986 toyota 4x4 with a 22re motor. I just noticed a knocking noice a couple days ago. I just bought the truck last month and put a rebuilt head on it, head gasket, timing chain and guides. I adjusted the vaulves, reset the timing changed the oil and it runs great, and has no problem with power. I checked the oil a couple days ago and noticed it was almost a quart low so i grabbed some cheap oil i had in the garage and filled it back up. Since then ive noticed a knock when i start the truck. The knock seems to goes away after i drive the truck 5-10 miles or so. Until i get heat in the engine i only hear the noise as im excellerating and not at idle. I was woundering, could the noise be do to the cheap oil I put in it or is it something more serious? If its the oil, could anyone recommend a good oil or oil additive to get rid of the knock.

oh yea i did forget to mention, the truck has good oil pressure and has not been overheated.

Does the sound come from the top end of the motor or bottom?

Wat weight oil are you using?

How many miles are on it?

My truck has done that for a long time. I think it is piston slap, where the piston needs to expand a little to fit the cylinder. It can be a sign of worn cylinders or pistons. If it is a result of normal wear and tear, it will do that for a long time, just take it easy until the engine warms up. There were some GM vehicles that had it real bad. Look up GM piston slap for more information about it.

thanks for your input. i just changed the oil again today, i went to Valvoline 10/30 high miledge synthetic blend and added i qt of lucas oil treatment. Now it seems to have quieted it down alot. the motor has 200 thousand miles on it and seems to run really strong. The noise i was hearing sounded alot like an older chevy when you start them up they knock for a minute or so until the oil gets up to the top of the motor. since i changed the oil and added the aditive, it helped it. i do plan on doing a complet rebuild but was hopeing it would get me through atleast through the winter. One more question, has anyone on here ever adjusted the tortion bars on these trucks to do a small lift on them? right now it has 235's on it and i would like to put 31's or possibly 33's underneath it. I was thinking about adjusting the tortion bars and doing a 2 or 3 inch body lift. My son just bought an 87 toy and we was wondering what the easiest and cheapest way to get these tires underneath our trucks. Any sugestions would be greatly appreaciated. thanks .

Cranking the torsion bars will lift it a little, but the ride quality will suck. 31's will fit with little to no t-bar adjustment. 33's, a little cranking and you should be fine. My buddy mike WAS running 33X12.50's with a little bit of rub.

your motors makinf sound? sounds like a 22re to me but the sounds is more like piston slap my tail rig does that no biggie i just start ti and idle it up till its warm then its fine again but it sounds like a deasel when its first started though lol

If u wanna run 33's I'd suggest a body lift. Leave the front geometry alone. I wouldn't have touch mine, but it had the rancho suspension on it when I got it.

I would go 31's unless you plan on regearing the diff's. I've been on a mission to find gears at pullapart without luck. I'd like to run 33's, but since its my daily driver I'm not gonna do it till I get some different gears.

look it to ball joint spacers and taller springs hangers in the rear you will clear 33's no problem also look into rims with 3.75 or 4" back spacing and you should not have to worry about pinch weld rubbing/trimming.

i dont mean to sound stupid but what are ball joint spacers and how do they work? and are you saying if we run 33 inch tires we will have to regear the diffs but with 31's we wont?
