Cold weather carb(?) problem
Alright I'm at wits end on this thing! It's a stock '85 22R with the stock Aisan carb.
In the AM (freezing or so) when I leave it starts right up, fast idle and choke works great.
I'll drive a half block and it will hiccup like loss of fuel, then on we go, then it gets worse and worse until it's not drivable, then it stalls. Wait 10 seconds and it will start and run wellenough to get 50 feet down the road and on.
It's almost like vapor lock only it's cold out.
Come home in the afternoon (45 degrees) start the truck and drive away with no issues...
Got any ideas?

That came to mind I will do that this afternoon and try it again.
Something that just came to mind as well. When I bought this truck they were running it on an electric fuel pump. I put a new stock pump on it.
The choke linkage was messed up as well that was corrected to make the choke work properly.

Kinda sounds like the fuel bowl in getting emptied then refills when idling, drains when normal driving. Have you checked the float bowl when it dies? To verify the fuel level is still in the middle of the glass.
Or as you stated, possibly the choke isn't pulling off after it warmed up?

I thought about that as well and have not had a chance to check it. But that doesn't really explain the running fine in warmer weather.
So this afternoon I changed the fuel filter and threw some heet in it and connected the electric fuel pump.
Took it for a drive from cold. It run fine but started to hiccup, I hit the switch for the electric and it was fine, ran the pump for just a sec.

Yep pretty wierd but that may have been something different.
This morning it was the usual routine, pump the pedal to the floor once and turn the key, started up just fine.
Ran down the road just fine as well. I bet it was water in the fuel the filter looked like new.
It did throw a scary moment at me whe I was feeling all happy and oh' joyful the throttle stuck open!!! I got it to the side of the road with some rather warm brakes and found the choke stuck closed and indeed the fast idle cam holding the throttle way too for open. Open the choke and the throttle went to home.
Something else to look at, perhaps that is why the chock was disconnected when I got it..

Okay so the Saga continues.
It's back to needing the electric fuel pump to run during high consumption times like going down the high way at speed or accelerating.
I need to learn how to adjust the float and check it out.
Then I'll report back..
