86-88 vs 89-94 steering box.
I'm planing my build and when it comes to hi steer, I have a question. I recently picked up a steeing box from a 90 4runner. My friend has a 86 box in his 93 sas pickup. He said his box will work better than the one I have in my truck due to fame width and box throw, and that we should make a deal and trade. I've heard that the 90s boxes are better? I have a 85 pickup that needs some love, so I'm gathering parts to rebuild the front suspension and axle, and ditch the push pull steering. So I guess my question is what's better for my needs?

Kinda Confused here. If you have an 85 pickup and haven't converted it to crossover just yet, your box isn't the same as 86-88 and 89-95 boxes. They aren't more powerful boxes without the matching power steering pump which is a higher pressure unit. There is also a slight difference in steering shaft length, but they work across all years. You just have to move the splines a little on the gear box or the steering shafts.
P.S 86-95 boxes are not completely bolt on onto the 84-85 or any other push/pull truck either.

I know my box isn't the same, and I know that it isn't just bolt on. I was asking if one or the other is more desireable. I'm not gonna mess with the power steeeing pump.

As far as box goes, I don't think there will be any difference between them all. As it's the pump that makes the difference. Personally I would run a matched set, but that's just me. Preferably the later model pump/box.

found the difference the earlier style uses a large bearing for the input shaft (stonger). later boxes used a realy small bearing. bolth boxes mount and turn the same but the 88-86 is stronger and alittle shorter from the inputshaft to the base.
86-88 left side------------------------------------------------89 and on right side

I guess it depends on how you look at stronger then. Line pressures are higher on the later style boxes meaning the power steering is stronger then the earlier boxes.

So what I'm getting from this is when used with later models ps-pump, 90's boxes are have higher pressure. 86 88 boxes have a bigger berring though. Do they mount the same? With the 90 being longer.

There are two styles of Toyota IFS steering boxes, Early and Late. The early style came on 86-88 Pickup's and 86-89 4Runners. The late style came on the 89-95 Pickup and 90-95 4Runner. There are many internal differences between the boxes and most parts are not interchangeable. Externally the only difference is the length of the steering input shaft. The later style box has a 1" longer input gear. The later style box also has a slightly faster internal gearing ratio, requiring slightly less turns to get the box to full lock.

1988 pickup with a 1991 box???
[QUOTE=windedwalrus;51779081]i'm running an 88 pump with a 90 somthing box pushing 33's and a locker and havn't had a problem yet
so if i have a 1988 can i use a 1991 pickup box on it or will the 1inch differance make it not fit? will the shaft from a 90 fit in a 88?

Bump to an old thread cause no need starting a new one...
I have a 1989 steering box sitting in my garage right now. I had bought a bunch of SAS parts including a 1987 steering box that had already been drilled and tapped for hydro assist.
In attempt to sell my 1989 box i realized that it is more desirable than my 87 box thats already installed. Would it be worth it to swap out my 89 box with my already installed and tapped 87 box? Is it that big of a difference?
