What transmission for '83 5spd 4x4?

I need to replace the transmission on my '83. 22R engine. Does it need to be a very similar year, or do later models line up? If not, what kind of work is needed to make a later tranny fit? Thanks!

The newer model transmissions are all longer than the one in your truck. You will need cross member and driveshaft mods. Have you thought about the marlin crawler HD L52? It is supposed to solve most of the L52 weakness issues.

Ok thanks guys. I'm looking to go really cheap, and this is a daily driver, not a rock crawler..is the marlin crawler cheap (relatively) and good for the highway? Also, how hard are those mods? I know I can find later 80's transmissions pretty easily. I've taken a transimission out and put it back in before, but I've never done real modifications..not sure of my ability level there.

One more thing..I've found a couple 4speeds. How are these for daily drivers? I can't imagine they're great...but if that's what I can find for cheap, in good condition....Anybody with experience??? AND, if it's a long bed, does that make any difference matching up with my short bed?

Im pretty sure any tranny that starts with L"" is a direct bolt up with no mods. 4 speeds works, but if have any oversized tires you better take them off or get ready to buy a new clutch down the road.

Ok, I need a new clutch anyways. I have 31x10.50's, but I wouldn't mind getting a little closer to stock. I don't want a 4 speed, but I've been offered two of them for good prices. All I've been offered for 5 speeds is extremely high mileage and $400+ before-shipping costs. Otherwise I wouldn't even be thinking about a 4 speed.
