Transmission Questions
I have a 1980 4x4 with the L43 4-speed.
I have a L52 (I believe) that I got out of a junkyard and want to swap it into my truck. What do I need for the swap? Do I need a different clutch? What about my existing throwout bearing and hub, can I reuse them with the L52 or do I need L52 specific ones?
I have also heard that this tranny is somewhat weak? How do they hold up with daily driving on pavement and the occasional heavy Denver snowstorm? I have 31" tires and only plan to daily drive this thing, no plans for offroad.
Also, I hope that it is a true L52 but it wasn't the original transmission from the '83 4x4 that I pulled it from. Is there an easy way to tell the difference between a L50 and a L52?
Thanks for your help.. I will post pictures soon and maybe you folks can tell me if my truck has a lift or if it is stock height, I have no idea.. lol
Thanks
Kyle

Marlin makes a kit to make this easy. See above post.

Okay, well is it possible that anyone here knows the answer?
Honestly, I would prefer to know what I need and see if I have it all laying here in my garage instead of blowing $150 on a kit. Plus I don't want to buy a kit for an L52 if this transmission is a L50. How do I tell the difference?

The L50 and L52 are identical from the outside. The only identifying characteristic on the outside is that the L52 has a larger input shaft bearing. There are a few internal changes between the L50 and the L52, but the L52 is otherwise functionally identical to the L50. In other words, all the ancillary parts for an L50 will also fit an L52.
If you got all the outboard parts for your trans when you got it from the yard, you should be good to go. Your clutch, pressure plate, TO bearing, should all work. Otherwise, you've got some stuff to change out to get it to work properly.
As far as strength, you've got 31" tires and a 4.10 final drive - you should be fine.
