Hello guys I just purchased me a boat and my ol yota doesnt have trailer wiring, I did a lil searching and found out how to identify the wires by turning the turn signal and everything one by one and test for continuity but has anyone did this other ways or used certain kits just looking for a little help to try and do the.best job possible thanks

Toyota has amber turn signals instead of a dual element turn signal /brake light like many domestic vehicles so you need a trailer wiring kit with a converter box.
You can get them from U-Haul or even Wal-Mart. You can get plug in kits that you don't even have to splice (for some vehicles) or universal kits that you do have to cut and splice.
Pretty easy, just follow the instructions.

Yeah I was in AutoZone last night and seen they had some kits that required no splicing but it was for Toyota years 84-95 well I have a 82 so not much help there but I'll look some other places, but I would much better have something that plugged in instead of splicing everything

Sorry buddy, but with first gens, you're S.O.L. You're going to have to get a cut and splice style converter box, or universal. I did the search years ago and just had to splice one in. I used the instructions with the kit and my trusty haynes manual (FSM would be way better, but I used what I had at the time) with the wiring diagram in the back and made it happen. Not that hard.

Ok it doesn't seem that hard but the kit I looked at at AutoZone just had the plug and a bunch of wire with it to splice into my wiring will that work I really don't know what this converter is Yall talking about I thought just splicing into the wires would work and thanks for the help cause I'm picking the boat up Friday and need my lights to get it home

trailers take a combined brake and turn signal input (like domestic trucks, brake lamp flashes for turn signal) and toyota has seperate wires/lamps for those two functions so you need a box that combines the two signals into one.

Probably, but not sure is it's right. I went to a RV/camper sales and service place near me when I got mine. Asked a service guy what I needed and he handed it to me.

This is what I put on my 83. You will have to splice into the wires. I did it inside in the area behind the tail light where the the wire harness plugs into the tail light.

Well I'm bought to get off subject a lil here what do you guys think about pulling that boat with the ol 22r it's a 17' bass tracker aluminum and it weighs loaded down about 1800 pounds, I think I'll be ok except for big hills and sudden stops what do Yall think are what have Yall towed with your first gens with 22r

^^a 7 pin connector would be overkill on a first gen. They barely have enough guts to pull themselves let alone a load that would require brakes.
OP- google 4 pin connectors. It is not that hard to wire the adapter in.
Solder your connection, don't use those blade style crimp splicer things..you will have problems.
Don't expect to pull more than 1500lbs.

Ouch that is making me nervous now there is no turning back now I've already purchased the boat I sure as Hell hope I can pull that boat. I surely thought I would be ok pullin it

I have both a 87 and 93 and have pulled well over 2 ton quiet often with out problems.
Both trucks are 22R and RE
Brakes are hooked up 50/50 ( no LSPV )
33" tires on both
4.88 gears on both
I can run 70 MPH pulling a 16' car trailor loaded with another toyota pickup that's up most his as well. Stoping is no problem.
Here's a example:

By the way the Convertor is a must. Just start cutting a splicing. On the 2nd and 3rd gens the white wire is negative so make sure you have it correct and test each wire prior to splicing or soldering.

I pray you have a good brake controller and both axles are braking axles.
That load is too heavy for a toy mini truck

Some people may disagree but I for one must not. I'm a experienced driver and fabricator so I trust my truck and my workmanship that's been out into to accomplish my goals.
One thing I did forget to mention. I reinforced my very rear section of frame to handle the extra load capacity I throw on it. I believe that's a must do thing for those that pull a trailer.
Anyways back to OP. good luck buddy. Your truck should handle that boat with ease considering its in good running condition.if your running a larger tire then 31's and still have 4.10's don't plan on running highway speeds. Keep your brakes in good condition and watch your temp gauge to make sure your not over doing your engine when in lower gears. If you need help figuring out your wiring let me know. There's a thread on here that I gave another member directions on hooking up lights on his flat bed. If may or may not be helpful to you since your a 1st gen however that wiring the same between 2nd and 3rd gens. I will try to find you a link here shortly.
