Im about to buy a 83 pickup with a 4" lift, running, straight body, good tranny, good suspention, needs rubber the interior sucks, and it puts off white smoke out of the pipe is it worth 1200 bux? It has been sitting for a while and i think the carb needs rebuilt.

The fix to the steering scratchy sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

simple. I just sprayed a little wd-40 where the wheel meets the colum, right in that open space I sprayed in there. instantly no sound now when I turn the wheel!!

i picked up this truck for 450 cash. i would offer a bit lower then that b/c of the work you will have ahead of you. also since you said it has been sitting for a bit, is there any major rust. also mine came with 7inch lift and decent tires and rims.

anybody in the va beach area have a garage that they would not mind me whoring myself and the truck to for a bit??? i got half a case of beer left that i can donate to the person. the one i had access to now has a jeep in it getting built.

the tie rod sleeve disconnected on me today. so i think that is part of the problem. the owner before me had it maxed out and i think that is part of the reason why the steering is off. i will find out tomorrow. also the brake light and the battery light will no longer come on at all unless i pull the e brake in which case it is only the brake light coming on.

another option that nobody has brought up about the steering issue... drum roll please...

I did the rear leaf to front swap and it effectively moves your axle forward like 2". my truck did exactly the same thing until i shortened my drag link and front trailing arm on the top of the axle. i drove around for a few days without the trailing arm with the push pull and man that was scary. if you hit the brakes, the axle wraps and if you don't turn the steering wheel to compensate, the brakes essentially make you turn right. i shortened both of these by cutting, tapering, welding and then sleeving each rod with schedule 40. i hope this helps.

Anyway congrats on your purchase. Is your truck running a dropped draglink to compensate for the lift?

Some sloppyness in the steering can also be helped (though this might not help if yours is only wierd in one direction) but tightening the steering box. This procedure is from my '81 Toyota Factory manual.

Sounds like you are on the right track going to a lower lift and tracking down the wiring gremlins.
Here is a link to the wiring diagram for my '81, you have to peice the diagram together (don't have a means to put it into PDF) might be similar to '83

Can you perform a crossover steering conversion without a lift?

As fyreandwater stated, it's universally stated that a 3" lift is required.

on the isue about the "brake" and "discharge" lights on the dash. i am having the same isue there is a click in the dash like a relay activating and then both lights turn on. some times pulling the parking brake and then leting it go back in will turn them off agian. i was wondering are these lights set to turn on as a dummy light of some sort to endicate a problem or simply a short? If simply a short where would be a good place to start?

everything in the dash is factory save a CB and an aftermarket CD player, however they do not tie in to the main wire harnes of the truck. being the third owner of my 83 i couldnt bring myself to hack up any wires so ran all new for the addons.
