Hood coming apart ?

The hood on my 1980 is separating from the structural support ribs on the underside of the hood. The glue or caulking that was factory installed has let go and the sheet metal part vibrates making an awful noise when going over bumps.
Has anyone else come across this and if so, what's the fix for it ?

Some panel adhesive from an autobody store would be great.

Clamp....or turn over and put weight on the ribs....etc..

Clean the area to be bonded as well as you can.

Panel adhesive from auto body store, eh? My hood has done the same exact thing. Figure it would need spot welding, but I had no idea. I'm just living with it. My hood just has some "waves" going through it every now and then when I drive.

But it would be cool to fix it...

Right. Seems like very thin sheet metal, and painted.

Luckily it doesn't seem to cause any problems. I just don't like the feel of a flimsy hood, which is how it acts once those welds start separating.

Its happening to my 87. I'll deal with it when I do a respray at some point.

Yeah. I'd do the same, but I'm not sure if the Chinook will ever get a new coat of paint. Would take a lot of work getting rid of some rust spots, first. Worth it...but not sure if it'll ever happen.

I also recommend panel adhesive, slacker has good experience with them. Easy fix!

Most panel auto body panel adhesive requires a special gun. Last time I needed one it was something like $100 for the gun. Eastwood sells their own "panel adhesive refill" for a body kit they sell. The cartridges are only $19.49 each and can be applied with an ordinary $4.99 caulk gun from the hardware store. Just thought I'd pass along the tip.

Thanks for the replies.
Those who have used the adhesive, do you just fill the space and let it dry or do you press the hood back to the ribs somehow ?
If so, how have you pressed them together ?

Mine came apart years ago. Put some goop in there and forgot about it until today. Maybe thats the slight wave sound I hear at a given rpm.

Only people like us who spend so much time working on our own vehicles would think to put stickers on the underside of the hood.

pretty much any sort of seam sealer or flexible adhesive will work. I think a panel bonding adhesive would be too stiff for this purpose.

Go to your hardware store of choice, grab a tube of outdoor weather sealant or something like that and goop it in.

Do not do it when the hood is up side down as the weird pressure on the sheet metal might make it stay with a certain wave once the goo dries. do not hold the hood skin against the braces or the opposite as that is putting added stress into the sheet metal.

Preferably clean the ares you will be gooping too so thers no oils
