lockers lock your axles together more or less... so if you have a locker in your rear axle both tires will spin on the back instead of just one... there's tons of set ups out there... if your on the street you would want air, aux or e-lockers..... that way you can turn them off for street use.... however, for sand and street use you way not even want them... somethin to look into and consider... limited slip is atleast nice if you ask me. It sucks to be stuck in the mud in 4wheel drive and only 3 tires are spinning...

Well the dccd is wit the transfer of the power... if set to manual on lock its 50/50 an all the way up is 65/35... they made it different on some years.... but if its on auto the computor plays a big part in it... along wit the sinc all wheel system... which is what I'd wonder about if you took the drive train out of a sti....

But to answer one of your above questions, the L52 will bolt up with no modifications. Pretty sure any L series will bolt right up to any 20R or 22R first gen without any modification whatsoever. Any transmission which was paired to a 22R(E) stock will bolt up to any other 22R(E). But the longer, later model tranny's will require driveshaft mods. But as far as transmission bellhousing to engine, no mods.

i know this is an old thread but its not the input shaft that a different size its the input BEARING thats a different size. and its really only the 5th gear that is weak in these trannys.

Sorry not true. The 'L' based 4-speed that Toyota used before the 5's is virtually indestructible. It is way over engineered for a 4 banger and can take a beating like no other manual tranny I have seen. It does lack for top end speed though. From your post I think you need to invest in a quality transmission cooler.

And EXACTLY how did you come with the fact he needs to invest in a quality transmission cooler again? And EXACTLY how are you supposed to put a quality transmission cooler on a manual trans in order to keep it cooled and reliable again?

Woa xxxtreme. 100x better?? My point was that all the L's weren't built weak, and yes the r-151's are great.

Should have put a smiley face after the cooler remark since I was kidding!! But you COULD put a larger sump on a manual with fins and it WOULD keep the hypoid cooler-don't ya think.

the earlier 4 spd toyota made for the 79 toyotas is an l43 which is a side shifting pile of crap.

Early on in this thread, Nix asked which trans he had L50/52. I did a search and somebody said that if you reach into the bell housing and put your fingers on the bottom of the bolt on housing that the shaft protrudes thru, and there is a hole on the bottom of that it is a L52. I bought a trans from a 83 in junkyard which had the hole, turned out to need a rebuild. I found another 5spd that was good but doesn't have the hole I put it in and it shifts great. So I guess that is an answer to that Q. BTW my truck is a 1980 4x4 that had the L43 4spd
