Cam and Carb questions
So - I know I want/need a new cam and carb. Seems both of these are worn out - original, nearly 300,000 mile old equipment. Exactly what kind of cam by what manufacturer should I get for my very weighed-down camper truck? I know that I'd like a bit better performance, but I want to get as many miles as I can out of this really good 92,000 mile old engine rebuild. Don't wanna put in anything that would risk burning anything up, particularly with the big load I'm hauling. As to the carb, which Weber would be best for this application?
Thanks again, - Charlie
Whoops - did I forget to say that this on an '82 22R? Geez.

why switch to a weber? the stock aisin carb is very reliable. lots of praises over the weber are usually followed with admission of jetting issues that haven't been resolved.
unless you are getting rid of your emissions equipment or building a powerhouse of a motor, i see no reason to change.

Weber 32/36 and Engnbldr's 268 cam. I've been runnin this combo for over 3yrs with ZERO problems, and that little 275K mile 22R pulls like a team of cracked out mules.
Make sure you are getting a "genuine" Weber and not a cheaper priced knock-off. You get what you pay for.

I got mine at webercarbsdirect.com, cheapest out there for the 32/36 and it's a real weber.
I have the same combo 32/36 / EB268 but on mine power doesnt kick in until maybe 2,500 RPM but when it does it pulls hard (for a 4cyl) even on the 4:10's and 31's. Enough power to chrip the tires on a 1st gear clutch dump and 2nd gear shift.
If I were to do it again though, I think I would go with the weber 38 and 261 cam. For the ultimate low end. Especially since my block was shaved down and I am bored 30 over with a new stock EB head. SO my cam timing is probably about 2 degrees off (retarded i think) from where it should be affecting my bottom end some.

To the OP, email Ted and tell him what you have and what you want. It sounds like an RV cam might be the setup for you? On the carb, here's my opinion. People that hate webers or hate the stock carb had a bad experience with them. I think a stock carb, when rebuilt CORRECTLY, performs well. A weber carb, installed correctly, will perform even better...if its installed correctly. Key word..correctly.
The Weber 38 works great if you have some engine modifications, but its not worth it on a stock engine. The 32/36 is probably the Weber for your setup.

when you buy a "real" weber, they give you instructions on how to tune it, troubleshoot, and parts list to modify it. grab a weber. the throttle shaft wont be loose and causing a huge vac leak like your aisin.

Hey thanks everyone for all the great info.
A little clarification: My setup is stock, save for Downey header that's treated me right for eight years. Basically, I think the Aisin carb is shot beyond redemption. If I rebuild it, it'd be the third time. The secondary coughs like bear when I step on it, and kinda mutters the rest of the time. So what IS the bore on the stock Aisin? With a new Weber, I don't think I'd wanna go much bigger. After all, this is a camper rig. I just need to be able to go down the road easily and cheaply, if yuh know what I mean.

you know if it was just the choke you can stop it from opening and just not have a choke so you don't have to mess with it.
