Body swap VSS question

Finishing up (oh sure) my 92 2wd 22re swap into a 82 4x4 and found that I cannot install the speed sensor into the old 4x4 transfer case. So--- since this is a standard trans, can I just leave the VSS plug disconnected and run the speedo cluster from the 82? It is my understanding that the VSS runs the 92 electric speedo, but also speaks to the ECU but only as regards cruse control and auto trans issues. Am I missing something that would affect driveability? PS if this question is in the wrong area I'm sorry. Not always easy to be sure where to post.http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr.../confused2.gif

The older trucks with cruise control usually have a VSS attached to the back side of the speedometer where the mechanical speedo cable attaches. See if you have a setup like that and perhaps the signals are compatible between the two.

yeah , I was sure your USA trucks has the speed sensor in the speedo already ? For the Canadian Trucks , downey (when they were open) use to have a VSS avaliable for doing swaps .. I have the company name who originally manufactured them for downey somewhere here .. I'll have a look

Thank you both for your replies, but perhaps I was not clear. I have two issues: first, I want to have a working speedo and if I use the instrument cluster which came with the 92 body, it only has electrical hookup for the speedo. As the matching VSS will not fit into the 82 trans, using that cluster is out unless someone makes a special VSS to fit. I think I can use the 82 instrument cluster and mechanical speedo cable to solve the basic issue, but What about issue #2? My wiring harness has the provision for the VSS since it was used to feed the speedo, buit as both vehicles are 5 speeds, and thus did not have cruse control, does the engine management computer need the VSS feed for any other reason?

Marlin makes a VSS for the earlier t-cases you might look into:

There are some later model ECU trouble codes that reference at VSS:
So there may be some need for it.

And you can have cruise control on a 5-speed, my '85 4Runner has the factory cruise control.
