I have an 84 pick up i purchased today. I race motocross going to use it when I go riding. Looking to totally restore it I have one of the best welders a on my side helping me on body was wondering what people's thoughts were on some parts and suggestion. Looking for a nice off-road truck sand washes mountain and canyon trails, occasionally crawling .so far interested in marlin 5 inch crawler lift with lce performance motor now just need help with upgrade axle,transmission,wheel spacers ,etc. I'm not looking to make a crawler jus have the minor capability too more gear to sand washes and off-roading in canyons. Remember I have 8k to invest wanna make it right. Interior will be done once engine and lift is on jus gutting it and paint at the moment and rust work.

OK so far i came up with marlin transmission rebuild have it sent in and also buy a transfer case with it. then either lce motor or 22reperormance motor, marlin lift 5inch lift with hd springs, .just want a reliable truck i can drive and take on some real trails without clunking on me

just picked up a 83 toyota pick 4x4 have 8k to invest. New to this so any help would be appreciated looking to make a relaiable truck i can drive and take on some trails. so far came up with marlin 5 inch lift,transfer case with marlin transmission rebuild,lce motor or 22reperformance motor. there minor rust work which i have a welder for just wanted more suggestion on gear ratios tires size and other upgrades to strengthen it.

never mind just did some research on marlin transmissions and they sound horrible just goin to replace all new bearing and hopefully theirs some way strengthen it

gearing will depend on what tire size you will be running. and if you need wheel spacers also will depend on your tire size to , like if you have real wide tires or you like a narrower tire and the back spacing of the wheels you will have

brakes: 1st gen brakes suck..I would look at doing the Front Range off road Tacoma brake conversion

High Steer: do it, best handling mod you can do for a SA toyota truck

Lockers: I would do a high pinion ARB selectable locker upfront.

Springs: what do you want to go so high? I did a 5" lift and now I wish i hadn't gone so high..will be pulling springs from the spring pack to lower it a bit

$8K is a good budget. I would do a lot of research before placing that first order

I would do a turbo 3RZ swap instead of LCE or 22RPerformance. No matter how much you spend on a 22R, you won't get the power of a built, 16V, forced air induction 3RZ...

$8K will get a lot done on these trucks. To put it in to perspective, I have spent over $12K on a full restoration on my truck and I have done the following so far:
*Completely rebuilt engine (Head job, bored 030 over, polished crank, new cam, rebuilt rockers, new timing kit, new belts, new timing cover, new water pump, new oil pump, desmog kit, new distributor, new fuel pump, new motor mounts, new fly wheel, new alternator, new starter, etc... It is a COMPLETE rebuild)
*New clutch
*Completely stripped and painted frame
*Old Man Emu springs
*Bilstein 5100 shocks
*New shackles
*Rebuilt steering knuckles
*Heavy duty steering tie rod
*Rebuilt and painted front/rear axles
*Rebuilt hub locks
*New front brake calipers & disks
*Rear disc brake conversion
*All new fuel and brake lines
*Rebuilt driveshafts
*Stripped and painted fuel tank
*New alloy wheels and 31" tires
*New stainless headers
*New exhaust
*Replaced floorpans in cab

So essentially, you have a healthy budget... now you just need to prioritize your spending. Personally, if the motor currently runs ok then I would start with the suspension first and work your way up. If you don't mind it being out of commission for a while, I would highly recommend popping the cab and bed off to make life easier for you. Plus you can take care of any rust and shoot the frame a lot easier.

For gears, you want to talk to Rob (DropZone^^^). I don't know much about what gears work best for certain tires and terrain, but you should have stock 4.10's in you truck. I can easily push 31" tires with my 4.10's. The previous owner had 33" tires on my truck and it would turn them but wouldn't pull past 45 mph (engine was tired and out of tune at that time).

As for that engine, if you can turn a wrench, I would recommend rebuilding it yourself. I have rebuilt dozens of Kawasaki and Suzuki motorcycle engines and a few Chevy and Ford engines, and the 22R is by far the easier engine I have ever rebuilt. It can be done for around $1,400 after parts and machine shop bills. Mine was about $2,000 but I went way above and beyond a standard rebuilt. There is no way in hell that I would spend $5K for an LCE engine that I can build myself. At least the 22rePerformance.com engines are somewhat economical.

thanks a lot very helpful. I have ll the time I need just like to get things done quick I race motocross and been tearing down motors before i knew the name of the parts. Wasnt too sure about this motor but since it sounds pretty easy i may just tear it down myself and see what i come up with. I really like what you did kawazx636 i want to do just about the same amount of work honestly. This can be a daily driver more like a track truck or when Im at my farm in Norcal. Must be reliable and able to handle some nice trails. looking for something i can drive and take on a trail and not worry bout too much. I wanted to take the whole body off but i not in the position to do that where I am. The motor runs ,interior is done def going to need floor pans and some other minor work. Im moving back to norcal next week so once im there ill have all tools and time.
