So I got the flywheel drilled and the bushing for the pilot bearing made. Looks like I might have to put the radiator in the bed because its so tight.

Today I started making the adapter plate out of 5/16ths plate I got from a metal recycle place close to where I live. It was fun because I got to use a torch for the first time. So I got all the holes drilled for the engine side, then bolted the plate on with the flywheel and bushing so I could line up the transmission and transpose the marks onto the adapter plate to drill and tap.

So I got the transmission all bolted up with the clutch in and all and did a second trial fit. So this is how the drive-train sits with the engine sitting on the 22r mounts on the frame with just the stock Mercedes mounts that came with the engine. Its a little bit high in the front definitely going to need some kind of power bulge on the hood so it will close. This could probably be remedied by a two or three inch body lift but I don't care for them, the engine is already heavier and putting more weight up higher and I don't want to add to this by raising the body. I moved all the brake lines and gas lines closer together and on top of the frame as the Mercedes exhaust is on the opposite side as the 22r I also had to massage the fire-wall in a couple inches so I can use the stock Mercedes down pipe. I'm pretty stoked because with the engine in this position the shifters are in the exact right position and I can get the valve cover off easily, as your supposed to do valve adjustments every 12k miles. Also there is decent room between the oil pan and the steering rods.

Hehe, I would take off the exhaust except I'm working out of a tiny one car garage that's full of tools and car parts, It just takes less room up hanging under the truck. Shoot, I have to push the truck half-way out of the garage just to get the engine in because the ceiling is so low my hoist hits it.
Also I still haven't decided how to do the exhaust yet, maybe a single smoke stack or something not sure really though.

Hey Slacker, do you have a pic of it by chance? I briefly checked your site and only saw generation specific, with no first gen hoods. I could just be blind though.

Also I figure I should do a shameless plug for my wanted ad as this thread will likely get more views than it. I'm looking for a forward shift rail that selects the 4wd. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f12/.../#post51541850

So not much has got done mostly because of the holiday weekend. But I did end up going to the junk yard to pick some stuff up since it was half off. Ended up picking up a Saab inter cooler, Saab alternator and a Tarus two speed fan. So I have been researching and evidently the Saab 9000 alternator will bolt to the same spot as the old one and almost has double the output at 115A which will work great for when I make the starter powered york for my air source. Also almost finished the mounts will post some pics tomorrow.

So I got the engine all bolted up on the simple plates I made. I cut more of the cross-member out the front so I could fit a radiator, what I didn't plan for is the fact that oil cooler is incredibly unwieldy. It will take up a lot of the room in the front coupled by the fact that I can't get rid of it. The new plan is to mount the radiator in the bed with a small air scoop to push air through it.

I mounted up the down pipe and it is close to just about everything I actually had to shave down some of the shift fork or it wouldn't have cleared. I'm thinking of using exhaust wrap to help keep the temps down on the surrounding stuff.

Just been working on it slowly, got the oil cooler mounted more or less its just temporarily for now. I have plans to have the oil hard lines replaced with something more flexible so I can mount in a better location. Mounted the transfer case to the stock cross member the plate is just temporary till I l learn how to weld better.

You can see the oil cooler tucked up by the valance.

Looks like I need some front springs soon.

So I got the engine running, but my excitement was tempered by the fact that the transmission that I got, that was supposedly good, makes really bad grinding sounds in 3rd 4th and 5th. I guess I'm in search for another one.

Yeah my front springs are bad looking for some waggy springs.

Got some work done one the pickup, ended up installing a manual temp guage as I don't trust the stock one, got the throttle linkage mostly made up still need to get a stronger spring for the return as it sticks when you go full throttle. Cut the hood so I could finally be able to close it and some other misc things.

Just a pic of the radiator in the bed

Still need a place to mount these up

Truthfully I don't know if it will have cooling problems, only time will tell. I still plan to cut a hole in the side of the bed and put some kind of air scope so it will push air through the radiator at speed.

Got some stuff done mostly getting spare parts from the junkyard. Spent most of the time today chasing down the diesel leaks around the injectors and primer pump, but also got some of the emblems mounted on the truck.
